Hey everybody... thanks for all the well-wishes!
I have to say... I never once ever thought that I would conclude that the best birthday present I could ever imagine for my 65th would be a steroid injection! But, it actually came to pass yesterday when -- on my birthday! -- I kept a doctor's appointment with an orthopedic specialist concerning the chronic and at times debilitating pain in my left shoulder. This condition -- which I described in more detail over in the "Frozen Shoulder" thread -- had intensified over the past 2 months to the point that I was denied restful sleep and any semblance of a quality of life.
Thankfully, this story does have a happy ending, at least for now. The physician -- Dr. Erik McGoldrick, who comes very highly recommended by his peers and in a short time showed me that he was both skillful and empathetic -- administered "the shot" which, to make a long story short, has so far had the hoped-for effect of eliminating most of the pain and allowed me to get a long restful sleep last night for the first time in months. Hooray!
It is my fervent hope that I will have manageable levels of shoulder pain for the next few months, and will continue on the road to full recovery. Future treatment will likely entail an MRI, and perhaps corrective surgery if warranted.
After the 90-minute drive home from the doctor's appointment, I attended a nice dinner party hosted by some of my best friends here. I was so tired, though, that I only had one celebratory beer and left the party early, and was in bed and fast asleep by 9 pm. Sleep, glorious uninterrupted sleep... what a treasure... you don't really know you miss it until it's not happening.
Thankful to be on the mend and to be embraced by friendship -- virtual or otherwise. Love to all, no exceptions.
