Jorma Kaukonen Suffolk Theater March, 9 2018

Forums:

Caught an absolutely magical night of music on behalf of Jorma Kaukonen at the Suffolk Theater in Riverhead on eastern Long Island last night.

It was my first time at this majestic theater that was built in 1932. The theater manager Lynn, rolled out the red-carpet for me. I really appreciate it..

It was 3 hour show with an intermission. Two sets of mesmerizing undulated Jorma Kaukonen Martin Acoustic Guitar bliss

The first set was highlighted by the best version of "I am the Light of this World" I ever heard him deliver. The vocal inflection on that an all the ragtime-blues pieces, we love Jorma for was better then I ever heard..

The second was even better then the first.

The show got to a point he was taking requests. I was right in front of him and I said "Good Sheppard" , he looked right at me, nodded his head and said "Good Sheppard". A Devine moment. Sweet version.

Water Song was also the best version I have ever heard, with arpeggios in perfect time, magic flowing from all of his fingers.

Acoustic - Bar Room Crystal Ball was splendid.

I have seen Jorma Kaukonen countless times in the last 40 years. Last night was my favorite show.

While Good he Kinda Creeps Me Out a Little. just saying..

He really came out of his shell and was fun to be in the room with my man.

Like a good wine he gets better with age.

Well put Mr. Thom.

Was fortunate to see Jorma tonight up at Levons.

A true treasure, and a special night.

That is so cool.  Glad you went!!

Just got my ELECTRIC! Hot Tuna tix for Eugene. Show's not for more than 5 months, but I'm already psyched!

Awesome Surfdead.

It's hard to fathom, but Steve Kimock with Hot Tuna really works. Enjoy.

Tickets for the July portion of the Hot Tuna tour are on hold for a moment.

Where do Jorma shows go after they die? Not much on Archive. Is there any way to hear this show (3-9)?

Most of the key Hot Tuna shows from tours end up being officially from them.

About 5 years back they were offering the shows from there own website called Tuna Tracks.  Tuna actually was doing this before Gov't Mule.

Then last week I was poking around and saw that Hot Tuna was now directing the fan to Amazon to purchase the shows. Screw that. I am still being charged for a free subscription from Amazon for just wanting to watch that Grateful Dead Documentary - Long Strange Trip.

I decided to poke around one more time, before I sent an email for direction & found they are working with a newer deal with HD Tracks. Looks high quality, but pricey.

A few of us here went to the Hot Tuna 12/9/2017 Paramount Show, so I am going to get that one soon.  Share it with family here. If it sounds good, not stuffy and with ambiance.

Needless to say if the 3/9 Jorma show goes on HD tracks, I am on it.

I inadvertently video taped some of the Good Sheppard to get the chords down, and the audio of Bar Room Crystal Ball. It sounds amazing.

The last Jorma album Aint in No Hurry, closes with this amazing acoustic version of Bar Room Crystal Ball. The album is produced by Larry Campbell.  I got to meet Larry and Teresa a few months back.  I mentioned to Larry how great that recording was and he said "thank Teresa, she sang the duet with Jorma and it was her idea"

Looking forward to the book. Thanks Rich.

The July portion of the Hot Tuna tour should be out tomorrow or early next week. They are playing the Great South Bay Music Festival again.

Got 4th row center for Electric Tuna w/ Kimock in Seattle at The Neptune, probably head down to Portland as well.

i had heard about the south bay shows.  should be a really good read, and the name of the book is perfect

Very happy that I was able to get the ticket I wanted today for the electric Hot Tuna/Kimock show in Eugene 9/1.

Is it Kimock w/ Tuna or Tuna!, plus Kimock?

The TicketsWest site says Hot Tuna Electric with Steve Kimock, as do the artist sites. Someone knows more than I do.

It's electric Hot Tuna, with Steve Kimock on stage playing with the band as a member.

Saw that lineup in December and it was wonderful.

The Great South Bay Hot Tuna 7/15 show goes on sale today at 9am. Steve Kimock is not listed.

Thanks, Bluelight.

The Suffolk Theater is very beautiful.   I’m happy it was restored and home to some great music and events.

I saw Robert Hunter there a few years ago,  great show.

Bluelight, The Vail Leavitt Music Hall in downtown Riverhead is another great old theater.  If you ever get a chance to go there,  it’s worth while. It hasn’t been modernized so it kind of like stepping into the past!  It’s a shame that Riverhead stopped putting on the Blues Festival in town; because they utilized both theaters in the past.

Reckoning and the Electrix have both played the Vail.  I think Half-Step also.

Thanks flip. I was just about to ask - How is Riverhead in daylight? By the time I got there, it was pitch black and it might as well been Port Chester. Got lost a little

Going to Google the Vail right now. Just talking to my father and we want to take a drive out there in April.

Riverhead is not a beautiful downtown like Patchogue or Pot Jefferson.  The founding fathers missed the mark!  There is the beautiful river and the stores were all built with their backs to the river.  It’s all parking lot on the river. They used to do a big blues fest with the  parking lot as the main stage area.  A couple good bars would have bands and also the Vail Leavitt.  It was a great event for a lot of years.  I’m not sure why the town stopped having it.  There’s a couple of good restaurants in town,  nothing spectacular though.  The Suffolk Theater is the highlight.  That and Long Island Aquarium.  The Aquarium has one of the nicest coral reef tanks in the country.
