Nilsson the man had guts; his lyrics and the music he wrote were ideally suited for some particularly enjoyable stoned and post-acid trip social listening in the '60s and early '70s. Have you read the lyrics? Have you listened to how the lyrics and music hooked together? The man was smart and talented.
Did his music scratch a deep itch? No. Did it please me? Yes. If I listened to his albums now (I must have a couple) I would enjoy it nostalgically and possibly sing along.
It's definitely a time stamp for that era (71), and with the Beatles freshly broken up, something about Ringo's narration made everything right with the world, which was part of the point...
