Just stumbled upon this recording. I actually attended this shooooow, and there are Funny stories
Maybe not the best or worst example, perhaps there are better versions out there.
However, it got me to listen a while, and think :: That stuff blows away a lot of what I've heard from 'DeadCo' or latest PLF versions.
It's a bit Goofy; there is a FuckUp in 'Truckin' but they continue to play ball, with a sense of humour. Available back then, now no way.
People will bitch me out, but I think that this era of GD - imitation bands did pretty well, compared to what we've got left now.
Also there was Super - Epic Nitrous Valley there, which was totally Maxxed Out. It beat Camden & Philly all to heck by the sheer Nitrousity of it all.
The venue was some Touristic "Castle Attraction" which was just a mouldering Ruin of old Bricks, so that was Totally Awesome.

I think that might have been
I think that might have been the first Show where I met the famous Zoner JLP, and she bought my extra ticket.
Could be mistaken on that, but I think so. Though semi - retired from VLZ, that JLP has always been a Pal since then.
Also 'met' some former zoners who move back & forth from New England to CColorado to Newfoundland every few years. They were the sketchiest 'zoners' I've ever encountered. Such weird people; and I'm tolerant in general of folks that took strange Drugs, and temporarily psychotic / antisocial. Probably in the midst of a Datura freakout, and thought I was a HedgeHog.
Anyhow, give that one a listen. Sounds better than much of the contemporary stuff.

7 years ago wow. I only got in for the last half ish and seem to remember a nice terrapin? Anyways what a fucking mess that place was the road in started to melt literally, got chased by some creature in the swamp trying to sneak in, fights on shakedown, roadblocks on the way out (still don't know how we got around them) and I think there was a cop stabbed at the Denny's nearby. Holy shit that was a hot summer.
"Anyhow, give that one a listen. Sounds better than much of the contemporary stuff."
I am sure im one of the few but there were some really hot Furthur JK shows I miss it alot.
BTW if anyone has the SBD's of 11-20 and 11-21-2011 maybe we can make a trade. Really nice shows I had but lost on a hard drive crash.

I was at this show also. A great time. There was plenty of room for dancing & zero hassles. The first set was full of goodies from the 60's including great versions of Born Cross-Eyed, Alligator, New Potato Caboose & Cream Puff War.
Things did get a little ugly in the lot after the show however, leading my friends & I to a quick departure. Shame. The first thing I saw was a guy having a seizure from nitrous who let go of his dog's leash. The dog ended up going at it with another dog until someone managed to get hold of the leashes.

"...and I think there was a cop stabbed at the Denny's nearby. Holy shit that was a hot summer..."
I was actually a yard or three away, after the show, outside 'Denny's', and it was sort of an 'attempted stabbing'. Would-be stabber appeared to be 'some local punk' and the cops rapidly face-planted him to the pavement before the handcuffs. May have left a tooth or two there at Denny's lot.
It was kinda gnarly, when I was just out having a cigarette after my coffee, and this weird shit transpires right over there. Just a bit too edgy after a whole array of strange happenings. Fortunately the cops refrained from any gunplay at the moment. I have to imagine that they later stopped to kick the kid around on 'the ride home'.

Saw them for the first time a week later Sunday the 11th at the Mann Center, best post '95 show I've seen, less than $50.00 with fees a couple rows behind the board.
That lineup took a lot of heat, but think about the weak and expensive sauce out there these days....

Had a great time. We went the day before and stayed at the Herkimer Inn (or something like that). Spent the majority of the day/night before dosed, swimming in the pool. Spent the morning and early afternoon of show day in the pool, hopped in the car and boogied to the venue. We were relaxed and chilled by the swimming and AC, so the wait to get in wasn't a big deal.
The amount of gas outside wis disturbing. People with kids on their shoulders were doing balloons. What the fuck?!?!
We made a wrong turn after the show and missed the roadblocks.

Once they jettisoned Jay Lane
Once they jettisoned Jay Lane, this band improved. A lot. The lineup that toured Winter 2010 was a completely different animal than the one that was working in Spring and Summer. Fond memories of Lelacheur Park in Lowell, then Nateva at Oxford, ME (day after Gelston Castle), then a week later in West Virginia (decent). Back to New England for Fall tour and they were going strong.
Weird to think of this as a high watermark for post-GD bands, but it's head and shoulders above anything going today. A band greater than the sum of their parts.

phil's 70th, their outside lands set, furthur fest soundcheck, and second set NYE 2011-2012 were the high points for me.
the things that band did during the big jam in viola lee blues were not of this world. and jk used to crush morning dew in a way that i dont really ever expect to see again.
their "ensemble" sound and decision to bring lead guitar down in the mix and bring bass and rhythm guitar up in the mix lead to some really inventive improvisations.

not to mention the russo
not to mention the russo factor. by the end of their run, russo was the MVP for sure. at the beginning of their run i will give MVP to chimenti, who could save any jam from going sour with a flip of his hair and a few fast jazzy runs.

i agree w/ much of this, and i used to rip further a lot.
i think chimenti got way too many solos in the beginning tho; always left wondering how he got more solos than jk lol. i lost interest in 2011 i think, msg specifically-got really stale.
ill never forget that tower run in early 2011. that first night was pretty fucking awesome. cryptical/other one/dew/hard rain/eyes/china cat/ubc maybe? can't remember. really great. jk did well that night, and obviously phil wrote the set list that night-shit was off the hook. entire joint dosed to the gills. classic.
deadnco and jrad pale in comparison. strange huh.

Tower run came to mind for me
Tower run came to mind for me, too. Just a great run of shows. For whatever reason I was following the setlists and recordings as they came out over the week, and decided to make the drive to catch at least this one:
Set 1: Cassidy, Bertha, High On A Mountain > Me and My Uncle > Mama Tried, Must've Been the Roses, Ashes and Glass, Foolish Heart
Set 2: Iko Iko, Estimated Prophet > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Hey Jude Reprise > Revolution, Viola Lee Blues > Comes A Time > Viola Lee Blues > Death Don't Have No Mercy > Viola Lee Blues > Turn on Your Lovelight
Encore: Box of Rain

that 2011-2012 NYE show was
that 2011-2012 NYE show was the last time for me, JR. i had felt they were on a decline for about a year at that point, and i felt like the first set was really bad...i was getting antsy and negative...the acid was there but not really kicking in...i moped all thru the first set until viola absolutley turned my mind inside out. i remember dancing, falling backwards inside myself and into blackness, and then waking up still dancing. after that the second set was one of the best sets of music i ever heard that band play, maybe the best. dew>dark star>masons>dark star was fucking insane and the st. stephen>fire was so, so fucking hot and such a cool nod to 2011(the eleven) going into the year of the dragon(with matches).
by the time i saw their last bay area shows in sept 2013 at the greek the decline had been continuing, and i just kinda knew it was the end. there had not been any hiatus or breakup announcement yet, but i knew it was my last chance to see this band and one of the last times i would ever have that experience.
got some bits and pieces at GD50...some incredible adventures with friends here, some great jams there, but not like furthur.
objectively jrad is a better band of more skilled musicians but they just dont hit that special dead show thing. i think within the past 5-10 years of GD offshoots my dream band would be furthur with head musical director joe russo calling all the shots :)
i will probably see one deadco show this year just out of respect for the good times i had while furthur was still going. it sucks i got on the bus so young and never got to see the q or jerry, but i will forever be thankful i was around to see this band, the last great vestige of the grateful dead, and really get to know what this whole thing is about. i dont think i would be a fan if i had not gotten to see them until deadco.
