That is a reference to a quote in a Hollywood film entitled "The Graduate".
so I've got a somewhat steady source of 5-Gallon buckets, HDPE food-grade, clean, not construction site.
Often enough, I find the blue barrels, larger sizes than 5-gallon, with lids, again food-grade.
In fact, I purchased the book written by some fellow in Ashland, OR called... "5-Gallon Bucket Book".
Author is "Chris Peterson". Look it up if you like.
I like some of his repurpose-ing ideas therein, and one of my favorites is the 5-gallon bucket Air - Conditioner.
his earthworm - bin seems feasible.
Anyone who has actually messed around with these projects, tell me the news.

where i lived in wisco was the central sands region... very, very sandy (soil?), so the beach material had to be heavily amended just for the typical garden weeds
I had a neighbor who had access to free 55 gal food grade blue barrels and upon request, she was nice enough to haul six home from work.
I cut the barrels in half - top and bottom - then cut a large hole in each end for drainage, dug big holes, buried them in the ground to ground level
filled each with half sand/half peat and grew the best blueberries I've ever grown. They loved that mix.
my neighbor who supplied me with the barrels was well supplied with fresh blueberries for the next three summers...

One particular interest is toward the 'Compostumbler' design theme.
I do realize that there are many Gorgeous variations upon that theme, but the Kustom-Kast versions cost mucho $$$, and the Backyard-Plans I've seen all require a side-door with latch & hinges, 1/4 " holes drilled, not much improvement on stationary rectangular bins and a shovel / rake combo.
The various lidded 20-30-40 gallon blue plastic Drums I've acquired have been quite sturdy over time, and rodent-proof. I keep bags of dry Pet Food in there and the mice / rats / raccoons have not yet broken in.
If anyone has an innovative Compost - Tumbler design, clue me in.

That is one design out there, end-over-end rather than horizontal spinning drum.
I suppose there are many variants to stationary bins which need manual hoeing, shoveling, etc.

5 gallon bucket air
5 gallon bucket air conditioner does not work - i tried to build a similar thing out of a cooler - needs more powerful fans than the usual recommendation of computer fans to do anything

I am also skeptical about the 5-gallon AC unit. But given cheap or Free Ice, and solar-powered fans, it might be less costly compared to the window A/C which I plug into my electric bill in the Hot Summer Months.
Hey, the fellow wrote an interesting book, and it has pretty photos, some good ideas, inspirational concepts.
What I find lacking is details about the Nitty-Gritties ....
"Which Dremel bit is proper for this; how do you achieve the perfect mating hole between PVC pipe & bucket; Acrylic, Latex, or SikaFlex for these Joints ?? "
I bought the Damn book, but there is not all that much technical advice in there. Plenty of design inspiration, but a bit lacking on details like, "... use this Dremel abrasive for trimming the rough edges..."
So instead of bitching and moaning about it here, I probably ought to get in touch with the author. I'm certain that s/he reads VLZ every week, thinking "How can 5-Gallon buckets adapt more to this Demographic ?? "
