Deadheads Who Become Health Nuts

Forums:

Exercise, supplements, diet, mediation.

The ironing isn't lost on me.

remember that time daylight called that one dude fat and he wrote like 3 paragraphs about his fitness ?

Same here, Mark.  I joined a powerlifting gym in my neighborhood and it's been fun getting some of my strength and lift numbers back up.  It also helps reinforce healthy-ish food decisions.

::Paging Ender::

You still lifting/training?

Yea, because taking care of your physical and spiritual health is such a bad thing.

If Jerry had tried it he'd still be here.

>If Jerry had tried it he'd still be here.

i love a good if jerry

Mediation is the key to good health.

For you youngins...the older you get, the slower you heal. Watch your form!

I tried mediation - it made me want to murder my ex.

Meditation? Moderation? Medication?

>>>Watch your form!

This is key. I see a lot of guys my age trying to go super hard and pump out whatever amount of reps they read they're supposed to do in Men's Fitness or whatever, and (pop!). Injured, out for three months.

I have a buddy who is a personal trainer. He ingests no less than 120 - 150 mg THC a day (edibles/tinctures). He trains people from 6 am to 7 pm (it's really funny to watch him train cops when he's toasted), and puts up huge weights. He's 216 lbs and just maxed out 407 lbs on bench.

The THC counteracts the negative effects of the "juice" that he orders from the Ukraine.

>>>For you youngins...the older you get, the slower you heal. Watch your form!

Oh yea.  I sprained my ankle skateboarding on my half pipe when I was 15 and never let it heal correctly.  From 15 -> 25 I developed a strange gait to compensate for the injury which led to all sorts of biomechanical issues which I'm *almost* done working through now.  It's crazy but I'm happy with where I'm at today and the direction I'm trending in.  Mobility and range of motion are huge.  My new gym is great.. everyone is super supportive.  I've been doing a lot of overhead squats with just the barbell for stability and mobility.. can really feel it deep and good.

I can't rotate my shoulder enough to hold the bar on back squats, so instead I do front squats. Much less weight, but damn, it busts a nut on the abs!

I don't have days for muscle groups anymore. Instead I do a rotation of exercises that use multiple muscle groups, and I change the weights and reps every day. I add in a few single muscle exercises at the end. It's keeping me fit and not fucking me up too bad.

Do you do any sort of self myofascial release?  I foam roll in the morning and night and have found it to be a big help for stretching/lengthening me out.

Yeah, a couple of days a week, but not as much as I should. I have one of those "extreme" rollers that works too well and hurts like a bitch. I only use it on select areas. I do stretch every other day.

>>I do stretch every other day.

Try to make it an everyday thing.  I use this thing called a P-Knot while I sit at my desk at work and it's constantly stretching me out.  Check it out:

https://p-knot.com

There are some cheaper alternatives online but this is something made locally here in RI.  The owner of the company has a sweet YouTube channel where he has dozens of videos with different ways to use the thing.

I roll out 2x daily as well. I also do maintenance chiropractic 1-2x per month.

>If Jerry had tried it he'd still be here.<

he did.

he was seeing a dr. in s. cruz.

was eating organic or the band was having organic produce as their catering.

too bad he re-hooked w/ the black widow...

>>I also do maintenance chiropractic 1-2x per month.

Nice.  A good chiropractor is an invaluable tool.  It's too bad they catch a bad rap in general as most physicians discredit the practice as there's no medicine to be sold to the patient.  It also gets discredited by the folks who go a couple times and are disappointed that they're not immediately fixed.  YOU have to put the work in... the chiroprater can help guide you and stare you on the right path.  Speaking from experience, it takes TIME and EFFORT to heal.  I like to think of the fascia as sort of like a basket weave pattern which has a tendency to get chewed up and tangled over time and neglect.  It takes combinations of different tension release therapies.  I recently checked out a foot reflexology place on my block and loved it... it was particularly helpful for me because I'm still trying to reestablish full range of motion to my ankle that I mangled in 2003.

I think Jerry did try- clearly.  Unfortunately trying does not equate to success.  It's tough struggling through disease and addiction(s).

Leave the hot mess that was Jerry out of this, it is what made him into what we have today.

it would be like removing the molesting Tulsa Chris got when he was a child. Totally different dude

>>>>>too bad he re-hooked w/ the black widow...

Or the white one.

Chiro every few weeks and a deep tissue massage monthly.

I'm making the switch to minimalist and/or zero drop shoes, and my feet, legs and hip flexors have never felt better. It's amazing what a proper shoe in the correct size will do. I'll tell you, these Lems Boulder boots are the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn.

I was 265 lbs a couple of years ago.  In the 230's about a year ago.  Right now, I'm 191 lbs!  My physician recommends that I reach and maintain a weight of 184 lbs.

In early December 2017, I had bad lab results for pre-diabetes, so I'm dedicating myself to more healthy living.  Pretty simple for me, really.  Pretty much eliminating most empty calories, cut down on alcohol in a big way, and no more post-show munchies.  Processed breads/grains for special occasions and in moderation.  Enjoying seeds, nuts, eggs (we have 5 laying hens), lotsa fresh produce, and whole intact grains (quinoa, brown rice), and other simple foods.  It all tastes great to me and I don't feel deprived.

And I've fully embraced walking as a gentle way to get back into physical shape.  I walk whenever I can. Clears the head and feels great!  Using my muscles and losing weight has made me flexible, strong, and relatively painless (my right osteoarthritic knee is able to do all sorts of things now).

I'm looking forward to doing some moderate weight training to tone up a bit.

Best to all of you,

Johnny D

Am in constant chronic pain. Neck and shoulders. Chiro cant fix cartiledge or arthritis....

Congrats, Johnny D... good for you man.  You sound like you're fully embracing your new lifestyle.

Cheers, Sio!

You're looking great in that facial hair thread.  Tie and a guitar seals the deal!

Enjoy 2018!

Awesome, Johnny D. Great stuff, my dude!

^I'm hoping to buy a fitted shirt sometime in the not-so-distant future.  wink

Thanks! yes

Did Mark finish the ironing? Or is it still lost?

I do micro-gym routines for 3 minutes once a day and I’m not much more fit per sé but my creativity is through the roof.

"I've been doing the Fonda workout. The Peter Fonda workout That's where I wake up, take a hit of acid, smoke a joint, and run to my sister's house and ask her for money."

Kevin Meaney

Obviously the ironing is lost on G'stain.

Go drink a protein shake and be somebody, bruh.

Sorry T Really ! Love Ya bro...

>>>Am in constant chronic pain. Neck and shoulders. Chiro cant fix cartiledge or arthritis....<<<

Sorry to hear you're in chronic pain.  Being in pain day in and day out certainly is a drag and often times you feel like you'll never get better.  While I don't have any experience with arthritis specifically, have you done an evaluation of your diet at all?  There are foods you can avoid which will help combat the chronic inflammation going on in your body.

Why is being conscientious about your health "nutty"?

Turtle, your body can regenerate cartilage with proper nutrition and supplements.  Arthritis is a curable condition.

Um tell me more?

My diet is pretty decent, but no, I've never seriously analyzed it.

life causes inflamation....

If you want to seriously delve into it, we can do it here, or we can talk via email or something else.

There are some tests that would need to be done, but once you find and eliminate the sources of inflammation in your diet, environment, etc., then you can begin to allow your body to get about doing its work instead of responding to chronic inflammation.

>>My diet is pretty decent,

Please describe decent.  Do you eat a lot of carbs and/or sugar?  Note that the body turns carbs into sugar during metabolic processes.  Sugar is really not good for trying to combat any sort of inflammatory/auto imimmune disorder (such as arthritis).

I would be happy to help you outline a pretty specific regimen of supplements and diet and stuff if you are interested.  If you want to email me at [email protected], I would be happy to help you start down the path to relief from the pain.

Not into sweets really.

I have some sugar in my otherwise black coffee in the morning.

have not eaten junk/fast food really for 30yrs.

i do eat carbs; rice, pasta.

buy mostly organic. wary of refined and processed items.

could eat more fruit but difficult to find good, ripe organics around me and it spoils too quick.

i'd be interested in corresponding schwa, thank you.

i know my workplace is a source of toxins, but can't do much about it...

Cool, I look forward to hearing from you.
