Branford Maralis

Forums:

Playing second of 2 shows tonight at the Lyric Theater in Stuart tonight.

Bringing my 80 year old Mother-in-law.

She is pumped for this one.

Last 2 shows we took her to was last year and we saw Tony Bennet and a week later we saw Johnny Mathis.

Nice!

The Branford sit in @ Red Rocks with Furthur could be my all time favorite post Jerry set.

marsalis?  or the Furthur set At Nassua that same tour where they redid the Nassua second set dead show from the 80s uhhh duh hot fire!

Cool. That will very good.

Thanks a lot for the 2018 GDAC Calendars Tim!

You rock!

lol

It was super good, I was there.

the sad thing is, a few days later in Eugene they played what could be described as the worst post Jerry set.

I'm catching his brother Wynton with the Lincoln Center Orchestra / Tribute to Duke Ellington at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam next month.  Needless to say I am pretty excited!

I am taking my son (bassist for his high school jazz band) to see Branford in April at a place I've never been to before outside Toronto.

The theater they're playing has a "youth in arts" program for elementary and high school kids - his ticket price (with high school ID) was $9.75 after service fees. He decided he wanted to try box seats for it - with all due respect to piano players, he didn't want us to grab front row seats only to have the piano block his view of the upright bass.

It was the jazz quartet tour.

Joey Calderazzo on the piano

Eric Revis on stand up bass

Justin Faulkner on drums

90 min show with one encore. One of the best shows I have seen in a couple of years. The jams were out of bounds and Justin Faulkner is one of the best drummers I have ever seen live.

What a fun night with my Mother-in-law, she said she won't be able to sleep tonight.

The best part of the night was no phones, video recorders or talkers. I love old people.

Did you guys dose?

lol <<<

what's your favorite post Jerry set / show?

No dose.

I'm a long time fan of Branford, Wynton, Ellis and Chicken....

Feel very Privileged to have seen the 1st 3 shoes he played w/ the GD (3/29/90, 12/31/90, 9/10/91) & when he guested w/ Phil @ the Beacon in April '00.  I was into jazz @ the time of those first gigs and had some idea of his and his brother's careers, but hadn't seen him live on his own yet.  Even more incredible was reading fairly recently that he basically stepped onstage @ that 1st gig (Nassau 3/29/90) having never rehearsed with them or learned the songs.  Seen him many times since those days, he always throws in a Dark Star or Slipknot tease.

I'm sure it wasn't too hard for him to figure out. Like a physicist teaching a 6th grade math class.

Contrast Branford with this show, where Clarence Clemons (who had guested w/the GD @ least a half dozen times during their '87-'88 Top 40 era) is left completely in the dust with his doors blown off during the Playin' in the Band psychedelic meltdown.  They don't show him any mercy the rest of the set either, he basically sounds like a bar band Wanker whenever he tries to join back in on the mostly psychedelic fare.  Healy had the good sense to basically turn him off during Morning Dew (wish he still had that good sense when Steve Miller guested in summer '92).  Finally they throw him the bone of a JB Goode Encore on which he played along competently.  Wisely enough, he confined his guesting to JGB after this show:

I was at the above show among others w Clarence as well as w JGB a few times. I think Clarence Clemons was more a distraction than an addition to the sound but I do love The Aiko Aiko from the above show.

A year and 4 days later w Branford opening and then sitting in for The NYE show was INCREDIBLE!
