What is Trader Joe's hiding re: food sources?

Forums:

Why won't they reveal their suppliers?

https://www.eater.com/2017/8/9/16099028/trader-joes-products

Because they don't have to?

You have a choice to shop there, or not.

Every grocery store I've shopped at has a store brand. It was always obvious to me that they aren't the manufacturer, they just rebrand.  I never thought of this as hiding anything.

If it's a commodity type product, I'm happy to buy it cheaper no matter what's printed on the label.

TJ has good deals on frozen Fish and Coffee beans.  I usually get a bag or two of their frozen Gyoza or Shumai (Asian dumplings) and they sell Ak-Mak crackers,  hard to find.

Good cheese and wine selections,  produce is OK,  not spectacular.

Are their frozen pies & TV dinners full of GMO stuff ?  Probably.  But I trust the cheese.

FOM ... the closest TJs to you is either the Denver or SLC markets. Why is this an issue to you?

Is this the bottom of the conspiracy-theory barrel?

I miss chemtrails.

WTC7 was hiding Trader Joe's Hummus "source".... in the basement.

I don't think their Beer prices are all that great;  Sierra Nevada products cost more than in other Beer stores.  But they have Oranjeboom in cans,  and their house brands are inexpensive.  The Vienna Lager is OK.

They definitely have a quality selection of tortilla chips,  compared to the average supermarket.

If I had a successful business, why should I reveal my company secrets to my competition? That would be stupid.

Trader Joes is a silly gimmick store to begin with, still crazy processing no matter the ingredient or the sources

How did the "cruise control" work out, kiddo?

... maybe you're on to something, clearly ned enjoys drinking Trader Joe's brand of "Kool Aid"

Another thing I find fascinating is how many people are under the impression that most food items carried by Trader Joe's are "healthy".

Fine. Car ran like a champ.

Answer the question?

>> ... maybe you're on to something, clearly ned enjoys drinking Trader Joe's brand of "Kool Aid"  <<

We do shop there for chips and snacky stuff. Like Stu mentioned, their produce is limited and not locally sourced. I wouldn't call that "drinking the Kool-Aid", more like making well-informed choices wiht the choices made available. Keep on trollin', FOM, but you aren't going to pigeon-hole me. Ever.

FOM...have you ever been to a Trader Joe's?

Maybe you're not a hard core Trader Joe "cultie", but you've clearly been towing the line in this thread ... unless, you were just chomping at the bit to "show up FOM"?

Yes, I've been to Trader Joe's several times and I've also shopped @ the old "co-op" on Pearl St. when it that section wasn't nearly as gentrified ... would much rather go to old co-op.

Towing what line....reality?

Guilty as charged.

TJs carbon footprint is ridiculous. They ship all over the world to and from where-houses and suppliers.

They don't have near enough organics for my needs.

I used to shop there regularly and they have some great tasting premade dishes, but they are definitely not "healthy" and I don't usually go there anymore.

>>>Another thing I find fascinating is how many people are under the impression that most food items carried by Trader Joe's are "healthy".

I'm not sure how many people you've talked to about this considering you may be a shut in so I assume you are just making this up.

Salt and Pepper Pistachios, Pralines, and Fire Roasted Tomato Salsa My big three from trader joes,

The nearest TJ for me is outside of Princeton,  about 20 miles away.  So if I have a delivery in the area,  I'll stop in for a free Coffee and grab a few Junque Food items.  There is a Lowe's in the same mega-strip mall,  where Hüsky is allowed,  so I often stop in there and see if they have any 'torn-bag' softener salt.

Some Lowe's sell the stuff at half-price,  others charge one dollar.  They rebag it in a clear plastic bag (with the original torn package).  Since I use the stuff anyway, it's worthwhile to grab a batch and store it in the barn.  The stuff goes for 5-8 bucks per bag depending if you get plain Sodium Chloride or the fancy "Iron Fighter" variety.  Once I lucked out and got 4-5 bags of the high-grade for a buck each.

Of course you want to select the bags which only lost a few crystals or pellets indecision

FOM is certifiably insane

If it helps to keep the "grid of the holodeck" from appearing, by all means tow that line ...

the real news here is that TJ's has knockoff tates cookies!!!!

I always consider the source I dont go out of my way for TJ's but I pick up some things if near one. Cheese, crackers, fruit and veg, nuts, coffee, some cookies. Meh. It can be less expensive. I guess we all take some chance with food in the marketplace.

Sorry to go off topic but what is with the list hoover? @3:03     I haven't been around much and I'm pretty stupid. sorry.

How can it possibly be a "good thing" for Trader Joe's to have shipped oranges from CA to south Florida in early January?!?

oranges.jpg

were you ever a reporter face?

you ask all the big questions

California Navels are good eating, Florida oranges are good for juicing.

And....

Florida citrus, still hurting from Irma, drops again in USDA forecast

With fruit continuing to fall off trees — and fruit size coming in smaller than usual — the forecast for the crop has been lowered again. This time by 8 percent.

In its latest forecast, released this week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated growers will produce 46 million 90-pound boxes of oranges in the 2017-18 season. That would be 4 million less than in a November estimate.

The new estimate would be 33 percent smaller than last season's crop and the lowest number of boxes produced since the 1944-45 season

Complains about them hiding the source of their food.  Takes picture of their food in their store clearly displaying the source.

Good work Mars.

Thank you for the explanation Orange, didn't realize there were significant market forces at play ... was just looking to sample the local orange crop during what I thought would've been "in season", but was disappointed to see they were shipped clear over from Cali.   Interesting there weren't any mandarins ... are Floridian's less likely to purchase them?

Good work Mars.<<<

Thank you, "Beeks"!
