JAMBASE: You’ve had guests out with the Family Band too, including Nicki Bluhm and Eric Krasno. How do you pick which guests to accompany the band?
PL: Well, of course, a lot of it does depend on who is available. But mostly we try to optimize the folks that have been a part of the Terrapin Family of musicians as much as we can. There are some notable exceptions. I’m looking forward to something with Stanley Jordan again, for example.
[...]
JAMBASE: How do you bring people like Stanley, or Eric Krasno, or Robert Randolph into the Family Band orbit?
PL: We’ve had a connection with Robert for a while, he did some Phil & Friends gigs several years ago. I don’t know, a lot of it just happens. Peter Shapiro for instance introduced us to Eric, so some of those come through Peter. But we put out the vibe that we’re looking for some great musicians and they somehow find us..
IGNORING for a moment the fact that the interviewer is asking the same question twice, I wonder what kind of great musicians are somehow finding their way to Terrapin Crossroads to play the rotted corpse of whatever is left of the Grateful Dead repertoire? Who is heeding the call of the vibe? Because, unless I'm missing something, and outside of the very occasional surprise artist, it seems like that "Creepy Stu Allen" dude wasn't that far off in his estimation of who's up for taking an at-bat with the songbook.

What kind of musicians? For
What kind of musicians? For the most part ones who never saw the Grateful Dead live, or ones who even got into them years after Jerry died.
25 years ago, no one outside of the immediate jam n drug band family would have been caught dead associating themselves with the Dead - like say indie rock bands - but now you have The National helping Bob Weir write an album, play and record it. Times change I guess, but why ANYONE would want to see a bunch of musicians play with Phil who "got woke" in the last 15 years....
Sorry I digress

Did you know: Jack Bruce
Did you know: Jack Bruce actually played with John McLaughlin in a band called Tony Williams Lifetime in 1969-1970?
I guess it must have been all of those jazz chops he honed in that heavy duty, fast paced fusion group Cream.
So, you know, I'm just saying -- Phil can't try his hand with a pickup group? Do some Stan Getz / Joao Gilberto tunes?
No, I'm way off on this one. Lol.
Let's hear it for Ross James and the Family Band as they do the latest take on a discarded PERRO tune, and then hang tight so we can encore with some Workingmans / Beauty material.
Dude's laughing all the way to the bank. Good for him. Let's not pretend like Eric Krasno or even Karl Denson are some hardcore improv heads. It's a good time and a middling-to-decent product.

Who is heeding the call of
TH brought up Deadicated, which although is a bit old now, still has artists on that comp playing GD covers live. Cracker did a solid version of Loser. I've heard Josh Ritter trot out UJB a few times. Willie Nelson covered Stella Blue. Akron/Family has done a few covers over the years. Those are non-jam bands that come to mind right away. I am sure I will think of a few more going forward.

I'm referring specifically to a quote or two from an interview that Phil gave to Shapirobase this past week:
and later from that same article
And I'm curious who are these interested musicians? And when Phil says "if I tried too hard to bring somebody into the orbit," I wonder if he's referring to, you know, actually playing something outside of an unrehearsed version of "Terrapin Station," if they're feeling ambitious.

But in my experience Bruce was terrible when he tried to play jazz.
So there's that.

I know that Sco has played with Phil since 2006, what I wrote expressed an (incorrect) assumption that it had been going on for over ten years (it has been, but since 2005 when he subbed for Larry, not '06 as that's when they started playing together more consistently) and was more of a (correctly expressed) thought that Phil and Sco playing together is not new. Certainly not a new development within "the last year or 2."
