New Phil Interview- Jambase

PL: There was a run we just did, in Chicago, and then we went to Nashville and played a 500-seat place there, a club. It was one of the greatest audiences I’ve ever experienced outside of New York City. They were so enthusiastic and they really inspired us so we delivered a pretty good show.

PL: I would just have to say don’t expect anything at all. That’s the answer. [laughs]

Always good advice

The good news.....

"Any chance I get I would love to go to the Q. As you noted it’s so complicated to do, but we always have that in our back pocket. We’re constantly communicating with everybody seeing whether or not it can be done. Stay tuned, I would say."

Curious how the duo will compare to those trio "mini sets" at the Ratdog/P&F co-bill for NYE in 2008?   They had a drummer, which I think helps a lot (alternated nights with Molo and Jay Lane) given Bobby's non traditional rhythmic style.   I also recall Bobby having difficulties here and there when he started on out on his solo work a few years back ... which I think is kind of the flip side to his "genius" of being able to react on the fly extremely well while playing with others, but outputting the composite (including "Jerry's role") of an arrangement sometimes seemed to throw him for a loop if he wasn't "quite all there" in the moment.  I recall him really having trouble on a TRI simulcast of him playing solo and it wasn't until Phil joined him on stage did he seem to get back on his horse (slowly).    However, I think Bobby made great strides on the solo front over time ... so perhaps the lack of a drummer, and just him and Phil might have some interesting legs to stand on.

the video of the bob/phil duo dark star in the jambase article is jaw droppingly, hand over my mouth, eyes wide open bad.

not like "its just not my thing", i mean like it sounds like a child learning to play the guitar over the worlds most boring elevator jazz bassist. im honestly amazed they did not just stop the song, apologize, and bring the band back out. holy crap. like, just, jesus fucking christ. i knew the shark had been jumped but i did not expect it to go this far. this isnt "i dont like JK in furthur i think he is weak" or "i dont like alex koford his drumming is boring", this is like a third grade jazz band on ludes, the sort of concert that makes you think, "are they ok up there? should someone call an ambulance?"

to say im amazed by  the phil/bob duo would be a real understatement.

Strong letter to follow!

"this is like a third grade jazz band on ludes"

Pure gold.

yeah, well put, daylight.

>> PL: Not really, not really. I kind of feel like, if I tried too hard to bring somebody into the orbit, it kind of compromises it somehow. We put the vibe out into the universe. The word gets out. You want to come and play free. There’s been no dearth of interested musicians.

Not until now, almost completely all the way through 2017, and until I read that sentence, did I realize that we truly are living in the post-truth era.

I was having flashbacks of spinal tap at the amusement park

it sounds like there was some good stuff during the full band portion of the show...i actually really like weir with an electric band, and just skipping around a vid of the later part of the set, it sounds loads better than family band to me...and im sure the phil/bob duo on a good night could pull off some of the workingmans/beauty stuff or something like el paso, but, man...that dark star is just something else.

Nashville>>>>

I believe it: white people love dey music down there

Portland will be a snoozer, then.
