>and Sacramento is the worst city in the state.
Yep. Just the other day, I was tailgated at 70 mph on the 2 lane 99 North. As soon as I could, I signaled and moved right, but the driver behind me could not advance due to the slower 2 cars up ahead. I was able to pass the drivers who could seem to manage the speed limit in the left lane, on the right and returned to the passing lane (please, NOT the "fast lane"). Tailgater followed suit in the right lane and before I had a chance to get over to the right again, he cut me off, with barely a few feet to spare.
As he passed I noticed he had a sign on his vehicle which bore the name of a driving school and phone number. Also had "student driver" stickers on the car. Just one male driver, as far as I could tell. Watched as he bobbed and weaved through traffic up ahead. Never used a signal and driving erratically all the way to an exit, where I passed him again. Was tempted to call the number or turn him into DMV, but maybe he had an emergency. Or, maybe he was a student going solo. In either case he drove pretty much like many people in the Sactown area. If he is an instructor, I'm sure I'll see more of his clients driving that way, since it appears he may practice what he teaches. Just hope I don't run into them - or vice versa.
Seattle was the worst for me just because the traffic just doesn't move. At least in New Jersey the assholes will still go 80. Driving in California never bothered me, but I only lived there for about 8 months.
I'm an older Subaru driver... and I drive an older Subaru. I'm not slower or faster than prevailing traffic, most of the time. Sometimes I'm faster on the freeway, but in town I'm patient and with the flow. I have noticed that I'm not quite as safe a driver as I used to be; I occasionally travel into the lane next to mine and then - quick! - come back to mine.
I don't know about that. I was in Florida last weekend and the drivers there were beyond awful<<<
Florida is one of the few places this sort of generalization can be made ... simply by virtue of having what is probably a disproportionate number of elderly residents.
Otherwise, how can you really make the claim about any given city / area? I have similar doubts when people say "I just visited such and such and the people there are so friendly".
I believe we tend to amplify annecdotal experience to be reflective of larger trends ... whether they're good or bad.
>>> simply by virtue of having what is probably a disproportionate number of elderly residents.
I'd agree if the ones I saw driving like shit were elderly but they weren't. They were all young drivers. In the middle of rush hour traffic in Fort Lauderdale, a car went across four lanes of traffic and down an embankment, on purpose, not on accident. He's lucky he didn't take anybody out with him. People not allowing merging, cutting people off, etc. Again, none were elderly. I grew up next to Leisure World in Southern California. I can handle and deal with elderly drivers and I'm patient with them.
I've been doing rideshare for a living and everyone is a maniac. I always use my turn signal and check my blind spots. Occasionally, I'll make a mistake on the road.
"What the fuck you honking at? Fuck you! It was an accident. Fuck you!" I yelled at a lady when I went the wrong way in a parking lot.
My pet automotive peeve is folks who pull out in front of you. Sometime they even make eye contact and you think all is good - then they pull out anyway. I rarely get annoyed enough at other drivers to react, but the other day I got a puller-outer that I almost couldn't avoid hitting. They got the long horn and the middle finger.

I was wondering about what demographic you may have had in mind, so mabye I was off ... however, I was thinking that it's possible there's some sort of dynamic that causes (younger) people who are living/driving in the midst of an elderly population to "learn to take advantage" over time as a result of getting frustrated with a lot of elderly drivers who are taking their time and driving more "carefully"?
