Pre / Post Show Music: Costello’s Spotify Motown Mix

Thanks to The Disco Biscuits, Sound Tribe Sector 9, and Umphrey's McGee for having us!

Let me know what I missed & we'll see you in Boston...

Amazing, three hour nonstop. No one else is taking this music furthur, catch them if you can.

^absolutely agree, they are the ones SEARCHING FOR THE SOUND for realz! LOVE IS REAL NOT FADEAWAY

No tease in WBYGN?

this band puts me to sleep.

if this band puts you to sleep you should just give up and tour with the terrapin family band - no consistent, touring band has improvised on these songs this well since the Q.

^that's just blasphemy.

JRAD puts you to sleep?? What GD related band doesn’t?

Imho JRAD is the best band playing GD music currently on the planet...

How songs and teases do they repeat at most shows?

^^they may very well be, never said they weren't-just goes to show the state of dead music in 2017 lol.

but since the Q? haha get the fuck outta here. that's crazy.

what band, since the Q, with a steady lineup for at least 1 full, GD/classic PLF length tour improvises better than JRAD?

some of the 05 PLF stuff with sless, nelson and herring comes pretty close but none of those are touring bands with a consistent lineup like JRAD or the Q

putting out a mind bending show or two here and there with a big time one-off band is one thing, doing it over and over again for multiple years in a row with the same group is a whole 'nother ball game.

"^that's just blasphemy. "

No, that's the plain truth.

>> what band, since the Q, with a steady lineup

Jazz Is Dead always looked pretty interesting. Never really delved into that body of work though. Not a steady lineup throughout but it seems like they had long tenures with the same membership.

I'm on the fence about JRAD this weekend.

I have a hard time paying to hear live GD music these days. Partly because the audience, partly because most bands are just beyond boring. At least this band isn't beyond boring.

IME the crowd for JRAD is much better than most other dead crowds...i never have issues with talkers, partly because JRAD's approach simply draws more serious music fans, and party because they actually play loud enough to drown out the talkers that are still there. Lower wook percentage than other shows IME

JRAD - Less wooks per capita than any other Grateful Dead related concert, guaranteed!™

Atiex, go to the show. If it's not your thing, you can finally write off GD related shows forever and never have to wonder again. But imo this band is about as good as it gets for folks like us who are more focused on adventurous improv and not really into the crowd culture or hearing Franklins Tower again

^I agree with daylight, ateix.  Not that I know you that well.

Thanks guys, appreciate the input. I'm taking it under consideration.

I like that they jammed in and out of the Prothetic Cubanos tune, that might have been what nudged me towards checking it out.

metzger is a big ribot fan

Who's the Radar Love fan? Can you tell him to stop?

JRAD

Meh....

Bunch of hipsters sucking of the GD!

Do the sell stealie kangols at their shows?

And blah blah blah about Joe playing with Phil. Phil plays with his kids too.

Thank you for your substantive contribution to this conversation, Hooper.

Somebody doesn’t like hipsters....and everybody is sucking off the GD...DSO is playing red rocks ...recreating red rocks...

slack, you are obsessed with JRAD teases. i wonder what percentage of your total posts are failed snide remarks about JRAD teases that nobody responds to

Every post is about teases.

Touch with touch teases

miracle with miracle teases

nFA with nFA teases

cr& s with Cumby teases

cumby with CR&S teases

radar love with stairway teases

lights with Don't stop believin teases

bertha with big railroad teases

throwing back into throwing with throwing teases

You're welcome ateix.

Jelly my disdain for hipsters is on a case to case basis. And yes everybody (including Bob, Mick, and Bill) is sucking that shit at this point. Even your boy Phil, who might be sucking it the most with his horrible lineups! More power to him if he can still find people to pay for that crap. Some nutty shit right there.

Haha slack

imo, jrad doesn't provide that x-factor, jaw dropping psychedelia that we all have come to know from plf lineups. there's no depth, no character in the music. it's boring.

in fact, it's almost as if their jams are all worked out prior, that pre-programmed nonsense that instantly leads to boredom. i like metzger, benevento and even russo, i think tom hamilton is a joke tho.

as far as phil bands besides the Q that blow away jrad-the entire shadow of the moon tour/band makes jrad seem like the family band. the 2006 bands, featuring very similar lineups-of course winter with sless and campbell, joan headband and sipe-huge soaring jams, pure improvisation. jrad just doesn't hold a candle to that shit. summer 2006, no sipe add molo and osby-the trey-less shows are incredible, and even the trey shows is better dead than jrad. all these bands have character, they take the music to places never before discovered-imo jrad doesn't deliver that.

even tours in 2008, the jackie n friends boring phil lineups were more exciting that jrad. idk, as much as i want to see live dead, i guess just not bad enough to want to see "the best live dead act" in 2017.

pretty much all plf tours from (and before) Q-->2008 are superior to jrad. in every way. that's my opinion.

and most of those bands/tours were way more extensive than the jrad runs. jrad does runs. not full tours. phil melted faces night in and night out back then. huge soaring deep meaningful jams. music so fucking good you could literally see it. jrad doesn't do that.

It's a little apples and oranges. JRAD isn't quite comparable to a Phil band, they're going for something different.

Personally I think they've gotten a little self-indulgent with the 45 minute Terrapins and such. They used to play discrete songs a lot more, now it's a lot of swirling jams, unfinished songs, and teases.

sometimes bringing your own X factor is a BIG help at shows

Not sure if they are a Granny Smith apple compared to  a Giant pumpkin,  however I've managed to stay awake,  and actually enjoy the last few JRAD shows I've listened to / streamed 'live'.

Did actually listen to / stream the last 3-4 DeadCo shows,  but they put me to sleep or made me change the station.  I like that they are helping their Grandchildren have nice Cars in college,  but the JRAD's sound better.

What's your favorite tease, Stu?

Dark Star with Simpson's theme, Cheeseburger in paradise and Holiday in Cambodia teases and secret language intro?

# - With a short Duo Jam that evolved into a “Aquí Como Allá" (Arsenio Rodríguez) Jam (From the Marc Ribot & Los Cubanos Postizos album “The Prosthetic Cubans”)

what pretentious bullshit, no one cares.

JRAD was boring (or bored) by mid 2014.

<<<>>>sometimes bringing your own X factor is a BIG help at shows

for sure-one sure tell sign the music blows, head full of gorgeous L and bored to tears.

Since you ask,  Mr. K-Esau;

I like the "I'm Just A Love Machine"  and "Sex Machine"  teases with Pink Floyd "Welcome To The Machine"  riffs intertwined throughout a 25 minute Shakedown Street.

Knowing that the JRAD's follow this website closely,  perhaps we'll catch that soon.

But a parody of Jackie Greene doing his Sesame Street theme song mixed in there would totally make me tighten my bandana for a head rush.  The Greene era was truly the Nadir of P&F lineups.  Maybe I am more senile (now in the current era compared to then),  but the Phamily Band are doing better than that.

>>>I'm on the fence about JRAD this weekend<<<

Go to the show. They're way better live than on streams.

Oh wait. That's ALWAYS true. Like seriously, SERIOUSLY always true.

You don't know shit about a show unless you're there.

Same as it ever was, same as it will always be.

But no matter the critiques or concerns going in, at the very least they have a brilliant drummer & keyboard player (Benevento/Russo Duo revised) and everyone else is damn good, and they really are dedicated to the jam, which is really what all these mopes who are so sure of what they think they know really believe in, in the end.

Anyway, don't listen to the few who sit at home, listen to steams and think they know.

GO TO THE SHOW!

The old ham and eggs era of Jackie Greene ...one mans crap is another mans gold...

you know, people form these opinions by going to the shows. just sayin.

and yes, old ham n eggs was better dead than jrad. musician for musician, just a better band. and that that weakest phil band example, by far.

^^^^

Kindly disagree...JRAD blows that Phil era and this phil era out da water...

^cool-yeah i agree about jrad blowing away the family bland, ain't too difficult.

* with forever in love tease

$ with hot legs tease

# with oye como va and feels so good teases

^haha-shit is stupid, i agree.

2006, ok, you got me, many shows better than jrad

but jackie greene? get outta town son

Does T-ham still play with his other band?

i mean, jge sucks, for sure-but i'll take him over tom hamilton, lol-kid is a joke.

and campbell runs circles around metzger and hamilton, molo blows away russo, particle dude and benevento are pretty even imo-molitz added much to plf, my favorite? no, but good.

like i said, that is the weakest plf example given.......still can't think of a phil band/tour that jrad surpasses. not even close.

^^^^

the best show of the ham and eggs era was glen falls w Trey..when Jackie was reduced to playing tambourine

Hamilton plays circles around Greene...not even close

"it's boring."

Freud called it projection.

>>>>This was their longest one set show, clocking in at just seconds under 3 hours flat.

its like the teases are filler to add three minutes to every tune when you forget what you're playing

fighting over cover bands

good stuff

more like discussing, but what are we supposed to talk about on this boring ass site?

how smart ender is

how funny slack is

how heady 6 is

how fashionable thom is

haha

I'm sure the JRAD crew approves of the sweatervest look. I'm pretty confident that I've seen at least Benevento in one before.

Hamilton and metzeger were absolutely terrible when I saw JBrad. It wasplike watching two amateurs try to play on a professional stage. Hamilton can barely play a solo,  if im being being honest. Met her just tries to play fast and can barely come up with anything. They played a cats down under the stars with no guitar solos in Philly. I’ve seen bar bands play that one better. Druitz, Russo, and Marco are all pretty good. Personally, I like seeing lead guitarists when I see GD music. I saw two rythym players who were in poor voice when trying to solo. I’d rather see JK and I’m not a big jk fan.

Don't think I've ever seen Russo & Benevento on the same stage, those are the two I'm most interested in seeing.

I think you would have really dug The Benevento/Russo Duo, ateix. One of the most creative groups I have ever seen.

For sure man. The recordings from that era are pretty great. Outside of PLF and Further, I've only ever seen Russo play in a trio with Sam Cohen (Apollo Sunshine) and Dave Harrington (Darkside) at a club in NYC. It was alright, didn't really scratch an itch for me.

It'd be interesting to see him play with a tighter, more fast-paced group like this.

JBrad????

John Mayer is Almost Dead btw, let’s have a little respect.

^lol

jspaz?
