Wow! Did not see this coming. Huge thanks to Slickrock and all the people in Utah and beyond who fought for this historic victory.

I don't think he gave to land
I don't think he gave to land to the state (yet). He is changing the designation from National Monument to just regular Bureau of Land Management land. Because you can't mine for coal in a national monument.

maybe I'm missing something here - this is no victory. Rather, from what I understand this will allow the sell off and plunder of our natural resources and beautiful public lands

Patagonia has been an outstanding supporter of the effort on Bears Ears. They've also produced some outstanding videos.
They also helped to get the Outdoor Retailers show to move out of Utah (went to Colorado) after Utah began suing the feds for federal land, a violation of the Utah constitution.
They saw no reason to bring millions of OR tourist dollars to Utah when Utah was treating the publics lands issues like they were.
I thanked them last President's Day with an impromptu appearance for a couple of hours. Lots of horn honking and thumbs up.

I just read that story I posted from the L.A. Times in the OP and watched the Patagonia video. Not good.
I take some comfort knowing Patagonia will keep fighting this unprecedented rape of our public lands one quality waterproof three-in-one at a time.
Sure, a large scale retail operation has a few underlying environmental issues related to the manufacture, logistics, and distribution of their goods; but don't let that inconvenient truth distract us from the fight ahead.
THANK YOU PATAGONIA

Some critics consider
Some critics consider Chouinard — and by extension his company — hypocritical, pointing out his vast wealth. He ranked No. 11 on the Forbes list of “12 Notable New Billionaires of 2017.”
“What’s his net worth?” San Juan County Commissioner Phil Lyman asked about Chouinard in a CNN interview. “You got Patagonia here waving the flag of environmentalism while he’s just completely exploiting the outdoors for industrialized tourism.”

I don't discount his question
I don't discount his question, but please note Lyman is the commissioner who, one month after the armed standoff with Cliven Bundy, helped organize an illegal ride over and through Native American ruins in Recapture Canyon. He is an outspoken opponent of environmental protections for the over 3 million acres of federal lands in his county and feels the 17,000 residents of San Juan, half of whom support the monument but remain unrepresented, should control America's public lands. Besides his accounting business, he has a compensation package worth over $50,000 to be a PART-TIME commissioner in San Juan County. He is also part of the commission that has gerrymandered voting districts in the county to try to exclude the majority, Native Americans, from holding more than one seat on the commission. A federal judge asked them to redraw the boundaries, they did and made it worse, so the judge said screw you I'll do it for you. And he did. The case is still pending.
The role of the rich in politics needs scrutiny, for sure. Did Lyman mention the Koch Brothers exploiting public lands for extractive industries?

I don't think this guy
I don't think this guy understands "industrial tourism" or Chouinard. I live in the shadow of Denali. The "industrial tourists" don't wear Patagonia. If they did I'd be a rich man. I'm a Patagonia dealer in a small tourist town. Industrial tourists buy Columbia.
