I enjoyed listening at home (thanks Streamers) both nights, but some of the 'Teases' or subtle references to other music went over my head.
From Jelly Roll's setlist post; I guess that is the official one: .
"... - With New Speedway Boogie Teases (SM & then MB), a “Fearless” (Pink Floyd) Tease (MB), possibly a “Good Lovin’” (The Rascals) Tease (MB), a short Duo Jam and an “In with the In Crowd” (Ramsey Lewis) Tease (MB)
# - With a New Speedway Boogie Tease (M), a Black Throated Wind Tease (SM) and an Easy Wind Tease (SM)
$ - With a Ruben & Cerise Tease (TH)
% - With “Do It Again” (Steely Dan) And “Taxman” (The Beatles) Jams
^ - With Let It Grow & Slipknot! Teases (Band)..."
I did notice the Black-Throated Wind tease/jam, but spaced on typing that one. Some distraction upon realizing the Calamari was overheating, and letting Hüsky outside for a Pee.
Anyway, the stream was very loud and clear until Terrapin, when it dropped out. After, there was another stream with much more crowd noise / different mics. The overall feeling I get after these and past JRAD shows I've heard is -- I really should go check them out next time they are nearby.
Surprised they did not include the scanners theme on the official Costello setlist. I did not listen last night, I prefer to wait for a higher quality version on archive, but I cant wait to check it out. You sure that's what was played Stu? Usually Costello is super, super on top of any kind of unusual song or tease, especially if it is a first time played kinda deal.
Dude, they tease repeats and other shit in every song. What's wrong with that?
For me, I usually dont notice most of the teases during a live show and can really only pick them out when I am chilled out, at home, quietly listening. But for me some of those repeat teases are actually really nice, it is a similar effect to a sandwich, or "going back into a song", like the classic PLF viola sandwiches; "viola v1> xxx > viola v2 > xxx > viola v3", or something like "playing in the band > xxx > xxx > xxx > playin reprise", except the band does not need to change gears to fully move back into a song w/ verses. you get the "going back into xxx" kinda thing going without putting on the brakes or wasting time with more vocals.
Wasn’t really impressed Friday. First time and last time I’ll be seeing them.
What were your gripes? I always like to hear people's JRAD gripes, I notice that younger folks like myself and all of my friends are totally head over heels for JRAD but alot of the older folks are either not into them or dont see them as that much different than other recent Dead acts. I have a close friend who is not all that into the dead, that ive been trying to get on the bus for years. GD 1974? "thats ok"... GD 1977? "this is pretty good"...classic JGB? "meh." JRAD? "holy shit i had no idea this music could be so great!!!" I find the generational divide with this band so fascinating, that young people who have shunned all of the best years of live GD can be totally enthralled with a JRAD youtube vid, and older heads that I know are super into improv are simply not blown away at all.
I can't say I'm 100% certain that it was the intro music to 'Scanners' but it sure sounded just like it. I've seen the film lots of times and own a VHS copy... However, I wasn't sitting there comparing the two (stream & VHS tape). Some of the scenes are shot in Montreal, Quebec, notably the car / van chase, and I remember lots of the locations in the downtown urban sections. "Oh there's that greasy burger place near the Hockey stadium !"
I lived there within a year or so after the film was released, so the storefronts hadn't changed much. I can almost convince myself that I've been in that record store.
Anyway here's a link to the 80's film trivia site; composer for that one and other Cronenberg films was Howard Shore. He had a band called 'Lighthouse'. http://www.fast-rewind.com/music_scanners.htm
When you get the audio from Archive or wherever, try uTubing 'Scanners' and check the intro theme. It sure sounds similar to what I heard Saturday night from JRAD.
Looking on Archive, I notice that there are a bunch of excellent quality JRAD recordings in 24-bit format. Anyone have some favorites to point out, let me know. I'll download a few at a time when I'm at 'The Office'. Show # 100 looks good (3/9/2017 I think).
Seen JRAD 3 years in row. Good times. JRAD is like GD played hard rock style. Not able to go slow tor the country-ish dead songs. They try to achieve liftoff every song. Russo drumlin like crazy over the lyrics (Franklin's Tower).
Still a very fun band to go see with no piss breaks built into there sets. Big fan of Marco, Metzger and Hamilton.
Not sure what old is on this board but I started going to shows in 79, and just caught my first JRAD show this month and loved it. I will be going back.
I kept thinking during the show - this is what happened to Joe Russo’s brain after five years of Furthur tempos
eh, i didnt mean "older" like old people, although thats how it sounds...i guess i meant more just folks who have been in the scene long enough to have seen alot of GD shows and had jerry at one of his various peaks(i guess id consider the last peak spring 1990).
my thoughts on the matter atm are pretty abstract, but here it goes.
before i saw live gd music, i tried to get into it a couple times and did not like it at all. then i saw the show, did a lil L, and after that it was like i learned a new language. when i went back and listened to gd stuff after seeing them live, it was a totally different experience, and i likened it to learning a new language. after seeing it live, i could understand the music.
oftentimes when discussing the more country-ish songs, slower songs, or jerry's focus on traditional music, i feel like i "dont get it", while the older heads all seem to find much of that kind of stuff just as magical as the improvisation.

for me, JRAD is in a whole nother world from bands like furthur, GD50, most PLF, etc. so it is interesting to hear all the different perspectives around this band. eh, i didnt mean "older" like old people, although thats how it sounds...i guess i meant more just folks who have been in the scene long enough to have seen alot of GD shows and had jerry at one of his various peaks(i guess id consider the last peak spring 1990).
my thoughts on the matter atm are pretty abstract, but here it goes.
before i saw live gd music, i tried to get into it a couple times and did not like it at all. then i saw the show, did a lil L, and after that it was like i learned a new language. when i went back and listened to gd stuff after seeing them live, it was a totally different experience, and i likened it to learning a new language. after seeing it live, i could understand the music.
oftentimes when discussing the more country-ish songs, slower songs, or jerry's focus on traditional music, i feel like i "dont get it", while the older heads all seem to find much of that kind of stuff just as magical as the improvisation.
i often wonder if there is a sort of second language to learn, where if i had seen jerry, i would be able to understand the language that is being spoken with some of that material, but since i never did, i only understand the improv side of things.

Disco Stu- their first show ever played is incredible. they have gotten better over the years, but not by much. these guys came out of the gates just crushing it. its a trip to hear a band play these songs for their first time better than most bands who have been playing them for years can play them.
another highlight is the recent 1st bank show in CO...2nd set starts with russo, billy martin and john medeski playing this giant drum sculpture thing, set on a riser above the band, made by adam morford. slowly the rest of the band comes out and plays space, russo heads back down to the kit, medeski heads to the keys with marco, and the go into an absolute monster dark star with morford and martin still playing the giant drum sculpture thing. total NYC experimental noisy thrash jazz dark star. it was a spectacle of epic proportions and one of the most complex and interesting things ive ever heard in between verses of a GD song.
there is a section of improv during Tennessee jed in this show im pretty partial to, some really good work from marco and tom; https://archive.org/details/jrad2015-10-30.partial.peluso.flac16/jrad201...
all of the shows at the fox in oakland are great. russo's first show playing gd music was at the fox, so they come back every year and always make it extra special and pull out all the stops.
