Phil Lesh & Friends "Dead Blues"
featuring Cody & Luther Dickinson, John Medeski, Charlie Musselwhite plus G Love and a very special guest.

The blues genre has always had a strong influence on the Grateful Dead. Each member had its own powerful relationship to the blues, especially Pigpen.

Phil Lesh & Friends will spend an evening playing Grateful Dead tunes that were influenced by the blues, blues covers that the Dead played and blues songs Phil loves.

Saturday, December 9
Doors 7pm / Show 8pm
Tickets $59
Ages 16+

>> a very special guest.

Rooster > Walkin' Blues :)

>>> featuring Cody & Luther Dickinson, John Medeski, Charlie Musselwhite...

why can't phil just announce a show w/o any gimmicky bs theme, and just melt it the fuck down?

shit, he has literally everything needed to do that. haha. strange.

and luther blows w/ phil.

I saw them together again last month and I love Luther (and Cody) with Phil.

I wish I could be at this show. Haven't heard Charlie Musselwhite in years and hope there's a stream.

he should have put buddy guy, gary clark jr or davy knowles on that bill

this is a solid maybe for me.

but it is getting less and less likely with each G Love and Special Sauce song I listen to. wow that is bad. really exited to see a lineup without the family band guys, and really exited to see medeski, but G Love, a harp player, and the blues focus does not bode well for deep space exploration.

a solid maybe.

Yeah, hope there's stream. I like G Love but Charlie is the master.

"and luther blows w/ phil. "

Not in '13 he didn't.  The last great tour.

^w/ anders and graham? meh.

id say the last good tour was the mini tour w/ russo/medeski/scofield/jk, also in '13; much heavier jams, deep psychedelic improve at points during those 5/6 shows. i'm no fan of jk or sco w/ phil either.

wait G Love from G Love and special sauce? hahahaha

I like cold beverages. Stick em in the fridge

Luther sucks w Phil .....zoner please.....go back to ragging on the family band...

Charlie Musselwhite is still alive?  Cool.

saw musselwhite 2 yrs ago in chicago. still sounds good. near phils age i think

I seen G Love open for SCI once..thought it was NYE01, but friendsofcheese.com doesn't have him listed as an "opener" & i don't want to dig through ticket stubs . it was sometime around then

Doesn't matter IMO, was generic blues played overboard, with boring ?jams/solos?..then again I was there to get down to SCI :)

was same year spearhead had an opening set.meh

I'm just finding out about this.

Anyone have an extra?

Enjoy your Saturday.

I'm looking for 2 tickets

Also posting an ISO 2 Tix for this show in the tickets folder!

happy weekend all!

<<<>>>Luther sucks w Phil .....zoner please.....go back to ragging on the family band...

not a problem, the family band is pure trash. but you eat up anything and everything phil, so i get it.

the last luther run was a disgrace. i don't get why phil lets the guy do whatever he's like on stage, it's quite boring-and he doesn't know dead music (which seems like most of phil's friends these days).

I can't speak to the last Luther run but the last Luther with Phil show at TXR was very good. Like fun and raunchy and playful and great moments of out there...

I've been wondering, for people who sound disappointed and pissed off at Phil's choices of musicians, what is the problem?

I have to say that I would far rather hear other music from musicians playing with Phil than hear Dead songs again and again. I've heard them. I appreciate when they play other music or at least new takes on the old stuff.

I rarely hear that it's a problem from people who hear the music regularly, and it's not just because Phil is playing.

i wonder how many times they'll play lovelight at this show?

also, what other music is being played? when it's billed as PLF, i'd like to see dead music....safe to say that's what the audience is paying for? lol. and i am sure this blues themed band will play grateful dead songs (and their famous covers), many of them.

like the family band, they're a dead cover band-people pay to see them play dead, granted it's bar band level trash, it's dead covers.

a problem? the regulars obviously will pay to see phil on stage with whomever, they like it. cool. people i know find what phil is doing as pretty much laughable, low quality product all around. we know he can still throw down, his friends just suck anymore.

read the show announcement and your Questions will b answered...

Johnnie B Goode knows a few blues covers.

People I know who actually go to TXR find what Phil is doing pretty enjoyable. I much rather go to a mellow TXR show then a east coast Cap show anytime.

glove has been butchering concerts for over 20 yrs. Absolutely horrible.

But damn, the rest of that lineup looks great.  I will be at the Emerald Cup all that day and probably will have nothing left. But otherwise, I would check this out.

Frank, I think it was earlier. Maybe 98 and it was in Portland. Horrible show. SCI is way influenced by their opener. That show sucked.

i know, mckenna. i was asking judit since she said she wants to hear other music besides dead. they're playing dead songs, dead covers, and the random blues song phil likes.

https://youtu.be/ANTaUnBeKyw

haha, jeez.

I've never heard G Love, listened to a few random moments (not minutes) of that youtube link. Not my juice. I wonder what he'll bring to the show?

pyramidheat, I didn't get that you were asking me, thanks to McKenna for asking so you could clarify. Still not sure what you're asking, but what I think my answer is, is that I'm tired of people playing GD like GD, or trying to. Breaks and jams in same places, set lists that one could expect based on the past, jams that sound like Jerry, all of that. Heads actually feel disappointed if that's not what is played, I'm the opposite.  If people are playing the same old songs, or in this case, GD blues and blues covers, the very least I'd like is for it to be new sounds, but with Phil's bass thumping and walking lines. Sound new, not like GD, reminiscent is great.

I love Grateful Dead music played by Grateful Dead. If the nuances of GD are lost, I want to hear original takes on it. I love Luther's raunchiness, his deep steelness.

I think we go for different things. I don't trip at shows, maybe that's a difference in our ear/brain/heart connection in the way we hear the music?

>>>>Not my juice

as soulless as Ryan Adams

new sounds, interpretations, i think that's one of the main aspects that has attracted people like us here at viva to plf all these years

i just like good music, which is why i've always went to see phil- tripping is great but never necessary and is secondary to the whole thing imo. phil used to play so god damn good it felt like you were tripping whether you dosed or not. i know you remember.

L is just the icing on the cake. gimme that solid well made packed full of flavor super moist and chocolatey base - that shit is gone, for some reason.

"Blues" has never been the strongest chapter in the Great American Songbook for Phil to tackle.

Just not feeling this one. I'll wait for the announcement of TXR's Seder Night.

searched my stubs MarkD...it was 01~02 (superhero ball theme that year), i knew it had to be after 99 bc i was at big cypress & it was after that

SCI played amazing all run...the openers (minus some keller), not so much

^ Man, that is.. unlistenable. cringe anarchy.

nice show. the hot 'lanta, and eyes were standouts. the let it grow must have been first time played for some of the friends cause it was a train wreck.

^I remember not wanting to attend this run with what I thought was a weak lineup, but changed my mind and attended the show on 02/22/14 and the performance was much better than I had expected.

Luther in particular blew my mind that night.  Felt like he was finally unleashed for an evening.  At least, that's how I felt at the time.

I think that there was a Big Boss Man>Jam(anarchistic?)>Hear My Train A-Coming segment in the first set that stood out.

Now here's a TXR shoe I'd attend if I was w/in a few hr's driving distance.  Luthur is THE F-IN MAN!!!!!!  He plays GD with a unique creative flair unlike anyone else, which is why the "Karaoke Along With" crowd is uncomfortable with it.  I was skeptical @ 1st but that fall '13 tour was Awesome in every way (oh except for the presence of Gray-Ham lol).  Of course Anders is pretty awesome too.  Now I can see Gackie Greene bringing any lineup down (Still a Wanker in my book).

SCI - LOL - Worst Band Ever - not much Fun mocking them w/o Nick around tho . . .

Medeski always brings a touch of psychedelic jammyness.  GLove - meh - but am Curious what he'd sound like "out of his element"

Musselwhite is GOD
SHould be a good show- I'll take blues ANY time

I'm still looking for 2 tix.  I really would like to see this.  I love the blues and I really like the Dickenson brothers, Medeski and Musselwhite as the lineup.  Thanks

I'm still looking for 2 as well.

I'm listening to the first link.  Guitar is very high in the mix.

Second link not as clear sounding and more chatter, but better mix regarding the harp and organ...
