10 years ago - The Other New York Marathon

Forums:

Hard to believe that a tradition near and dear to the inhabitants of areas known collectively as the Phil Zone, celebrates it's 10th anniversary today.

A great run. Peppy.

Thanks for so many photographs, Tony!

A great run. Peppy.

Indeed. That whole run was upbeat and fun.

Thanks for so many photographs, Tony!

You're welcome, Judit. I figured a 10 year anniversary deserved some love.

This show in particular tickled my ears. The covers done that night, including Phish's Story Of The Ghost, were great choices. I can still remember during Cryptical telling my friend that I was hearing Boris The Spider teases and them BAM there it was.

incredible run !

The last show if this run was incredible. I remember being blown away by the second set wheel, st stephen, eyes, and instrumental stella. Thanks for the pics tony!

lots of fun,  loved the nokia...

Yes, that was a fun run!

Wish Phil would do more stuff like this these days instead of pimping for his son's band.

thx for the post.

This was a great run of shows. I went to all but the last night. What a time. My buddy won about $10k in Atlantic City the weekend before this started & he booked adjoining rooms for the first 3 nights. We had a blast. Shows then late nights partying in NYC.

Some really great music was played. Excellent pics as always Tony. Thanks.

Remember this story? This article was from Page Six of the NY Post. The NY Daily News had the headline "Phil Lesh Smokes the Lion King."

https://pagesix.com/2007/11/08/lion-smells/

One of the last truly epic pl&f runs, some might say.

What a great time. Lots of fun with lots of zoners.  And my buddy ran in his 20th actual nyc marathon sometime during all that.  Wasn't that when "the lion king" got smoked out upstairs?

Yep, that's the link above Furious E's post.

Sorry, missed that. I tend to shy away from links

Funny thing about that is they really only seemed to enforce the no smoking until intermission. It was pretty much a free for all after that. It all changed by the next year however.

Its now called the Playstation Theater.

I try to avoid it now. The security there has become impossible. The pat down and frisking is worse then going thru customs at JFK!

Too bad, its not a bad room to see a show.

yeah, those instrumental stella's were tasty.

great pictures.

It really was a good place for a show. I saw King Crimson there in 2011 & the sound was incredible. I almost didn't recognize it with seating on the floor.

I need to go back & listen to some of those shows. I thought Steve Molitz fit in really well with Phil. Amazing keyboard player.

you mean particle dude

ya, i think it was cpl shows after marathon day, when molitz went off on that "egyption theme" crazed boogie beat tune...into what i blv was then called "particle jam" for lack of a title....the floor in front of stage was just insane...prob most fun dancing at a Phil Show since Lupos....it just seemed like everyone in whole bldng was trippin on same wavelength...or whatever...but, the whole floor was laughing and dancin at same time..it was a night ill never forget...

also, a friend of mine, in recovery, who had quit drinking for cpl years, was running marathon next day (w one leg he was born with and all). So he relapses this night before im at Nokia, and i find out about it...and between his sister and i, we make damn sure he s still gonna show up next morning....hungover as shit, and run marathon....lol, ya, we were pretty mad at him to say least (sister was like his trainer and had him at a hotel in city), so, he ran race....finished it somehow, and hasnt had a drink since...just an absolute wild , fun , and crazy couple of daze in nyc w Phil....and friends

>>>yeah, those instrumental stella's were tasty

damn right!

bout as good as Larry steel got, imho.

did that lineup do it more than just the one time?

into what i blv was then called "particle jam" for lack of a title

That is a Particle song called Elevator.

Went to a few of these, including the Halloween.

Hard to believe it's been a decade.  How Time flies.

The photos bring back memories of  "What handsome Telecaster & SG Jackie has,  shame he can barely play them..."

^haha

thanks tony! i forgot that...we started seeing it within a day, or days as "elevetor" , and instantly new it was a particle song, thus (hence) the particle jam name ....for all i know it may have only been the crowd on the floor that night calling it particle jam...that whole run is kinda a blur, and runs together in my mind as 2-3 shows, when it was 9...

i was at 10/31 nov 1, 2 7...that i know of...lol...i may have gone to one more

i was at 10/31 nov 1, 2 7...that i know of...lol...i may have gone to one more

I know how you feel. I'm sober and the only reason I know the dates of the shows I attend is because my photo files include the date as part of their metadate. lol

shit, im sober now, and i cant remember what i did last week...

Swell pics. Thx. smiley

11/5/07 was Ryan's birthday & my fav shoe of this Phil-A-Thon.  We even had balloons. Here's the setlist.

@Set 1: Brown-Eyed Women> The Golden Road> Viola Lee Blues (v1)> Operator> Viola Lee Blues (v2)>

Next Time You See Me> Viola Lee Blues (v3)> *Chest Fever> Sugaree

#Set 2: Happy Birthday Ryan, Eyes of the World (RA)> Scarlet Begonias (Phil)> China Cat Sunflower (JG)>

Bird Song (RA)> Goin' Down The Road feelin' Bad, Ripple, I Know You Rider> Uncle John's Band (PL & RA)>

Jam> Dark Star (v1)> Franklin's Tower> Dark Star (v2)

E: Donor Rap/Intros, Wharf Rat

@with Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) on keys for 1st song & sax rest of set, #with Ryan Adams, *1st time played

Trying to remember what year we held the Philathon blood and donor registration drive. Maybe in 2008.

SIHead, Delia, Ferbel (who couldn't donate but who came to hang out), Me, LadySI, JLP... can't remember who else...

"Ham & Eggers!"

That's what I remember, and quite a few other zoners bagging on this band.

But that's a continuing "zone" stapple, bagging on who Phil is playing with.

It took a little while, but I actually ended up really liking that band.

I liked Jackie better then than I do now.

But I do miss Larry Campbell.

I managed to sneak back stage one night, and it was just me and Ryan back there until Ryan realized that I didn't belong and he personally kicked me out of the backstage area :)

"..., and it was just me and Ryan back there until Ryan realized that I didn't belong..."

It sounds liek, a Kool story, but probably a different Year. I didn't go every night, so maybe there were Ryan appearances.

Won't argue over Ryan being there, or not. I just think it was a different Year or venue.

I'm not a physical guy, but I have a hard time imagining Ryan Adams pushing ANYone around.

Just sayin'.

Thank you for the nice words that have been said about my photos. I will go through some of the other nights and see if I can add a few more if they are wanted.

^they are!

He actually didn't touch me, he went and got the security person that was supposed to have kept me out of there in the first place and then escorted me out. It was a year or so after the big zone meltdown over him, and I was sort of surprised to see him as well. That was the only year I was at the Nokia for Phil, he did sit in on 11/5/07 apparently, at least according to the setlist above. Should have asked for a selfie :)

I liked Jackie better then than I do now.<<<

True that. In the beginning there was a certain something that was able to inject into P&F. Now I somewhat dread seeing him on a bill.

More Pics Tony Please!

Ryan was not in the band, but he also joined in the fun during the third set on 11/2.

The 2nd set was also way fun.  It was an acoustic set, with Phil playing a stand up bass.

smiley

Apologies, Phishie for doubting your recollection. Obviously, my memory is at fault (and that was one of the evenings I did not attend). Think I went to three of that run, possibly four. Definitely Halloween. I seem to remember staying overnight in Manhattan one night and seeing the show the night after. So that was likely 10/31 and 11/1.

No worries Stu, that was a long time ago!

So I guess it was the year after where Theresa C. did "What's Become Of The Baby" wearing a spooky dark hoody. I can not recall if it was still "Nokia" or changed to "Beast Buy". I do remember the lovely antique cel-phone Museum in all their glass cases. Then they were just gone. I wonder whatever happened to all of them.

You won't find better photographs of John Molo and those other guys he's playing with.

People ragged on this band all the time...some things never change ..even on the new zone...calling for the days of ham and eggs...I guess we will have to wait 10 years for peeps to give the past run it's due...or 2023 for the 2013 Cap run...and so on..
