Anyone seen Melvin Seals lately?

Gonna be in my small town next week, $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Saw him about 20 years ago, one lineup of musicians was decent, second time wasn't as good. Not sure about this group:

JGB Band is:
Melvin Seals - Hammond B3 and Leslies, Roland RD700 Keyboard, vocals
Zach Nugent - electric guitar, lead vocals
John Paul McLean - Bass
Pete Lavezzoli - Drums
Shirley Starks and Cheryl Rucker - backing vocal

What's the scoop?

He's thin!

Saw him for that price (well, actually I won some tickets, but I would have paid it) a month ago and felt it was worth it. I was surprised they did several GD tunes that were never done by JGB, including a jam that had a few psychedelic bones in it.

Thin? Really? I find that hard to believe, lol

Ah ok, sweet!

It's a fun time. You'll remember how much you love those songs.

Go to the show.

Love seeing Melvin! Maybe 4 times in the past 5 years. Good times, good vibes, good Hammond sound that makes you happy, and JGB music!

What would the odds be in a Melvin vs. Warren Haynes and Dave Schools competitive eating contest?

Zach Nugent is my favorite of the fake Jerries.

Agree with Brian. Seen JGB 5 times this year. New interest with Zak taking over last fall. Zak plays melodic just like jerry. Really like Zak guitar style and he pushes Melvin to play harder. I go every time I can.

Here is last week recording from Denver:

If you click on my name I recorded all the 5 shows I went to this year and sample yourself. THe JGB 1-1-2017 came out real nice. I thought they should of picked Zak instead of Mayer for the lead in D&C.

Video of last show:

Again think I have videos of last 5 shows I recorded on utube.

GO GO GO GO...Have Fun!!!

If you go, let us know how it turned out!

So I guess it has to be asked, is Zach related to Uncle Ted Nugent? Even if you don't agree with Ted's political clown act, he is a hell of a guitar player...

Melvin is Melvin...his regular satisfying full sound. Very solid rhythm section. Zach can definitely play guitar Jerry-esque. His singing can lack "emotion/sustain" (some nights he can come across as a bit of a country singer with a thin voice), but girls add cover.

Go to the show. It'll be fun.

Zak is not related to ted nugent. Zak played in 2 east cost GD/JGB bands before he was asked to play in Melvins JGB band. Melvin has lost weight though I would not call him thin.

Here is the DeadSet 2017 video from the annual JerryJam with melvin/zak.

Alan states:

His voice is not great I agree. Though some like his voice. When I first heard him over a year ago did not really like his voice though last few times I had seen him either I liked it more due to he grew on me or he sings slightly different then he use to. Agreed if he only sang not sure I would go see him. Though most jerry like guitar players do not sing that well. Its there playing that really matters.

Thanks for that video, Patrick. I forgot how great a Donna that Nicole D'Angelo played.

Talked to zak last week and he said his guitar is a irvin and is made out of the same piece of wood as jerry's. He was really excited someone asked about it. He is so down to earth and he walks around the venue just like everyone else and is very approachable. He has this innocence to him. Seems very nice and an average guy who can really play the guitar.

Did Gloria and Jackie retire?

If so he should drop the JGB part and just go with the Melvin Seals band. Not like Melvin is known for covering other musicians.

Did Gloria and Jackie retire?

==============================================================================

No they did not retire though they probably don't want to tour. Gloria and Jackie played at RR this year for Jerry's 75th with melvin and JGB.

Koons contacted Melvin and did not want him to call the band JGB is what I heard. So now it goes by "Melvin Seals and JGB". It states this on melvins home pages for the tapers to list it as "Melvin Seals and JGB" not just "JGB" so Koons does not come after him.

Yeah, my first ticket stub says JGB featuring former members of the Jerry Garcia Band. Melvin's name isn't even on it. Didn't he catch some shit for that a long time ago? Was that just internet squabble or did the higher ups not like him using that name? Deborah Koons probably wasn't pleazed frown

I thought they got around that problem by calling it "The JGB Band".

That wasn't good enough, I guess.

I'm fairly sure, I've seen Melvin play under Melvin Seals Band maybe 15 years ago. Though have noticed him flip-flop names over the past decade.

Well koons is now selling Jerry shows. If you did a internet search a few years back when the band was just called "JGB" then melvins JGB came up first before Jerry's. I saw this myself back then and thought Koons and the company selling the Jerry shows will not like this though this sort of flew under the radar for a number of years. About 2-3 years ago Melvin camp received a notice from Koons to not call it JGB. Or that is the way I remember it...

Yeah, I remember when the Jerry Garcia Band cds came out, Don't Let Go, How Sweet It Is, and Shining Star all had Estate of Jerry Garcia, I still have those. Deborah sinking her claws in. Wonder what kind of cut Melvin got/gets for How Sweet It Is and Shining Star?

Who takes over when Koons dies?

Ahmet Zappa?

Danny Rifkin's holograph.

>>>Ahmet Zappa?

Poor Dweezil. Can't even use Zappa Plays Zappa anymore. So how is that Jill Lesh doing these days, still gold diggin'? devil

>>>Ahmet Zappa?

lol. having a hard time figuring out which would be worse, him or Koons.

neighborhood gig at arts riot tonight, and tomorrow.

glad to see zach back in town, those early metro dead sets were fun.

should be a hoot !!

Saw him last month at June Lake. Great show.  Afterward he told us the story of how he got the JGB job. Pretty cool.  Then he bought my last 4 oz of salve.

Go to the show.

Saw him Labor Day weekend. I though it was really good I especially liked hearing Promontory Rider which I had not heard live in a looooooong time. The guitarist plays a replica of Tiger that was made by Doug Irwin's apprentence so the tone on his guitar was really really sweet.

18 hours and no "How could you miss him?"

Proud of you kidz.

just got back, meh... night 2 tomarrow, zachs terrible, no soul or voice, and btw...way to make your fans buy a guitar for u. Melvin had a nice double stack leslie this evening  Bring BAck the Stu he be the fuckin man

^ Yea.  I thought that guy Zach was pretty terrible as well when I saw them at Jerry Jam.  I don't think he can really sing and play the guitar at the same time.. it sounds silly but I swear every time he would go to sing he couldn't articulate the words coming out of his mouth to the rhythm.

Damn, lol

Not bad, I'd hit it wink

Melvin's agent said to me he doesn't like Long Island for this band; for various reasons...
