Leo Kottke

Going to see Leo Kottke at sold out show the City Winery in NYC this coming Monday, 10/9.

I've had a musical Enema & I'm now ready for best Dreadnaught Acoustic Guitar player that has ever graced the planet.

This is bucket list stuff. I've been planing this show way before it was even booked.  Got a front table & printing the menu now.

I have never had the fortune of seeing mighty Leo Kottke, but have been a big fan of his music since 1978.

Leo only booked 24 shows this year.

Anyone ever see Leo Kottke before?

Lucky you! I haven't seen him, but started listening to his albums many years ago. It's been awhile.

Have a great time!

Thanks so very much.  Leo is amazing.

Hopefully he's in a good mood & feels like talking it up with the crowd.

First saw Leo at the Tower in Philly in 1974.  It took me 10 minutes to figure out that there was only one guy on stage.

Saw him in Wilmington about 3 years ago, he still has it.

An inspiring guitarist I've been listening to for decades. A real nice guy with a very quirky sense of humor.

He was kind enough to speak to me for about 30 minutes on the phone for HomegrownRadioNJ.org . Here's the Podcast Player link, enjoy!:

I'd love to see him again!

Saw him and Mike Gordon a couple times in 05..toads place in new haven and the higher ground in burlington...

Awesome. Can't wait!

Saw him and had a backstage pass for his show w Gordo at the SF Fillmore.

Not just a fine and impressive guitarist - but a fantastic story teller with a very wry sense of humor.

~ Enjoy it!

>>>At the Tower in 1974...

I was there.

When I saw LK in Wichita,  Kansas,  he was very gracious about chatting w/ fans after the show.  I happened to have a nice copy of an LP which he signed for me (the one w/ Armadillo).

As I was the Brewer at the premier & only Brewpub in town,  I invited Leo K and crew for free Pints.  However,  he said that Booze was not part of the diet.  "Occupational hazard"  He said.

Hey Rik!

As I recall he was opening for someone that night, I believe Randy Newman but it's been so long I really don't remember.  Maybe Bonnie Raitt or Jesse Collin Young, I saw all of them at the Tower back then.

Leo Kottke was excellent last night at the City Winery in NYC.

{For dinner I had the Braised Brandt Farm Short Ribs & my Father had the Seared Snapper. Both were very good dishes, I must say}

There are two faces of Leo Kottke;

"Poker Face Leo" - all business, the best finger picking you will ever hear & see in your life. With one sung song.

"Story Teller Leo" - Where he brushes up on his Wikipedia page, sings all his songs that have vocals, shows off his best instrumental in both 6 & 12 string guitars, and jokes around with the audience all night long. It could have went either way. But we got "Story Teller Leo".

Tells the tale about being discharged from the Navy in 1964 because some crazy captain had him shoot out light bulbs with gun in a submarine and went partially deaf.  Working with Orchestras that couldn't keep up with him and folks dosing. A few failed Trombone playing storries.

Still my favorite guitar player.

Some of the songs played were:

Leo Kottke - City Winery, NYC 10/09/2017

Bean Time

Busted Bicycle

Louise

Pamela Brown

The Fisherman

Little Martha (Tells the story of how Duane Allman wrote the song, by a child's grave)

Living In the Country

Wet Floor ( A great new song, like his old stuff, not recorded yet. he doesn't like the tittle and may change it)

Leo Kottke is a national Treasure!

Thanks for the review, I will be seeing Leo Feb 2 and Bruce Cockburn Feb 5  if Grass Valley doesn't burn down by then.

I think it is so cool you are going to shows with your father.

I think you should loosen up and get some island vibes. Slack key guitar playing rules

I will be getting back Sat. from SF so a nice mellow evening of island stories and songs will be what I need.

Hi Bart! Good to hear from you.

Thanks for the link.

Guitar player magazine had some great articles about Slack Key guitar players and their technique back in the 1970's.

Enjoy your Leo show 2/18.
