Avocado Toast

Forums:

Why.

Avos should never be served warm.

I have never seen it on a menu, ever.  But I eat avocados for breakfast all the time and mashing one on toast is nice.  Unfortunately, price of avos is pretty high right now.

>>> Avos should never be served warm. <<<

I disagree. I like when they get warm and sort of melty on a burger or melted cheese sandwich. I like avocados warm or cool or cold or whatever.

nothing i hate worse than an avocado that has been in the fridge.

^ or a banana

I'm with judit...there is a time/place for warm avocados. Sushi comes to mind...

Agreed, but I have seen avocado toast on menus.  Why?  Easy money for the restaurants.

Sure it doesn't look appetizing, but usually you can skim the discolored funk of the top and the rest is good - at least for a while.  Avocados can be tricky.  Seems like they can go from rock hard and inedible to funky, discolored and inedible in 48 hours.

I once bought a super sized avocado from a market in Hawaii and was stoked, until I opened it up and discovered it was 85% giant seed.

We are all in agreement here.  Avocados are intended to be served at room temperature.  Avocado may be added to something warm (toast, burgers, tacos, omelettes, etc.) but the avocado itself should not be heated, just added to whatever item at room temp.

Fair amount of avocado toast being consumed here on the west coast.

I was thinking about making a take-off on Eggs Benedict - ciabatta bun, smoked salmon, poached egg, some sort of cheese sauce, a little heat. Seems like it needed one more thing to make it complete - something green. Now I realize a slice of avocado would be perfect.

No worries - the avocado will not be heated prior to its introduction to the egg.

I'm certainly not going to yuk someone's yum.

Nonetheless, I've found it amazing how I nearly gag on avocados that are cooked on a pizza ... yet could easily eat two big avos raw.

Have also noticed that it's far less of an issue when it's simply placed at room temperature on / in another food that's been heated.

I love avocado toast w/ an egg on top and some sprouts, on sourdough bread.  Best avocado toast I've ever had is in Baker City, Oregon at the Lone Pine Cafe, served on homemade potato-rye bread.

Avocados are so expensive right now because they are being shipped from other countries.

Avocados grown in the US are in season during our winters/ early spring.

So, like, tomatoes, eat them in season for best flavor and lowest carbon footprint.

Yes, I don't buy fresh tomatoes unless they are local and in-season... I use canned tomatoes for cooking in the winter, and make salads without them.

Avocado/guac and apple sauce on an english muffin=good

Cali had a bad harvest on avos this year. Drove costs of all avos up.

One of my Dad's favorite things. Avocado on toast with butter, salt and pepper.

Thanks for reminding me. Have forgotten about it. I love it too but without the pepper.

Avos are pretty much garbage right now. And expensive.  Waiting for the local harvests to resume.

They're going for $2.49 - $2.99 per avo in Telluride.

If I'm lucky, I can find them for $1.49-$1.99 in Montrose.

Yeah, the ones avail. now are pretty bad - they often rot w/o ever ripening. I suspect too-cold shipping.

I wonder if eating a locally raised cow has a smaller footprint than shipping a Mexican avocado (or South American)?

> but without the pepper. <

wait, what???

black pepper is essential to avocado consumption.

ps. nedley, i love you.

2 for $1 florida avos at my local mart. 3 times the size of a haas.

my tree took a hit in Irma.

Avocado festival In Carpinteria Ca this weekend

i get cados for Free from my Friend In Carpinteria

Lots Of Cado trees were plowed up in the 805 area code in 2014 - 2015 due to the drought - adding to shortages now

Nice try, but I never claimed to be an "environmentalist".

I am a "fatalist".  We're all pretty screwed, so what's the point?!?

>>> black pepper is essential to avocado consumption. <<<

No no no, can't do the black pepper. I do like and use white pepper when pepper's a good idea.

Agreed about ned, he's on it!

I blame the Bay Area

Ha! A while back there was a big deal about this on FB from some Sactown folks. It seems a local cook claimed he invented this and got into it on FB with some people.
Other than some entertaining banter for a day or so, I did think Avocado Toast might make a good band name.

Lots of great stuff at the "avo-t" merch table.
