I was hoping against hope they'd have canned him. "Arrogant fraud", as Paul Feinbaum said. I wish sports wasn't permeated by assholes, but you can't always get what you want.
Weirddude...i wouldve at least taken the oppurtunity at the press conferance when asked about the victim, to explain how there was no room for abuse on my team, at my program etc...and that since i worked mostly w young men (college football players age) , that i expected my coaches especially, who these kids look up to, to treat others, especially women, with the utmost respect. And that no form of abuse was acceptable, whether it was in their homes, on my sidelines, or in their forays into social media. Id go on to explain that only the lowest of the low, of men, hid behind their computer screens at home and lash out or abuse women. Just primordial ooze, trying to rise from depths of middle earth...
Ya, he missed a golden oppurtunity. Thanks for asking
Go frogs...they ain’t perfect but they seem to be decent human beings...as are the Ohio state players, I presume....no hatred of Ohio State from me or the frogs....let those without sin cast the first stone.
Glad I have no freaking clue who this Urban fellow is. I gave up on sports years ago. Also, people that listen to sports radio daily really need to get a life, sorry.
When Meyer was at Florida, he hired a wide receivers coach named Zach Smith. Zach Smith is the grandson of legendary college football coach Earle Bruce. Earle Bruce is one of Urban Meyer’s mentors and someone he holds in high regard.
While at Florida Zach Smith abused his wife and Meyer found out, ran it up the flagpole and I believe Smith went unpunished. But there is a history of spousal abuse at Florida.
Meyer moves to Ohio State and brings Zach Smith with him. Sounds like at Ohio St. Smith was not the model coach or person in general. In addition to continuing to physically abuse his wife, he was also openly cheating on her with a school employee and also ended up in drug rehab at one point.
Smith’s wife, who is continuing to get abused, tells Urban Meyer’s wife about the abuse. Mrs. Meyer sympathizes with her and tells her to stay away from dude.
Not sure exactly why, but a couple of months ago Zach Smith gets fired. A reporter looks into Smith and digs up all of this info on his previous issues with abusing his wife, as the wife went to the police too. The reporter interviews Mrs. Smith and she tells him of the years of abuse and how Meyer and his wife knew about it but nothing happened.
Cut to Big 10 football PR day where all of the coaches do their own press conference. At the press conference, the reporter asks Meyer about Smith’s wife being abused and asked if he knew anything about it. Meyer not only said he didn’t know anything about it but took it a step further and questioned why reporters would make stuff up like that.
Not good.
Of course he knew, his wife knew too and that got the ball rolling. For a minute people though he might get canned but he got a 3 game suspension.
No word on the current well-being of Courtney Smith, the abused, who I’m sure will be ostracized by the community for not taking her beatings in a COMPLETELY silent fashion.
thanks bucky. i was pulling for wisconsin & georgia last year, a good friend of mine at work is a badger. he's fun to be around when watching them play. hell, he's fun to be around when anybody's playing
Great recap , bucky. Let me add yesterdays news....the Ohio State Board of Trustees announced last week that theyd not only have a decision yesterday, but , thay theyd release full written transcripts of their findings and meetings that took place last week etc. And that theyd render a decision. They suspended Coach Meyer for 3 games. Thet then handed the media a 23 page report. In a following press conferance , a reporter asked Meyer if he could say a word to victim or comment on how this had all affected her (i forget how he exactly phrased question). Meyer s response was basically " this has been bad for everbody".
