Led by Indian tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain and Grammy-winning jazz superstar bassist-composer Dave Holland, Crosscurrents showcases the long and vibrant relationship between jazz and Indian classical music, both of which have improvisation as a core tenet. The international supergroup also features Bollywood star vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, guitarist Sanjay Divecha, jazz pianist Louiz Banks, saxophonist Chris Potter, and drummer Gino Banks.
Touring Stateside again (they had some West Coast dates earlier this fall and recently wrapped up a Euro tour). Tickets are tiered and priced with a bit of a premium but they are playing one of the best-sounding rooms here in the city.
I know from the great "Wayne Shorter, women drummers" thread, though, there are some mixed reactions to this outfit. Still I think it'd be foolish to miss this one.

I wasn't blown away with the show I saw a month or two back, but there could have been a number of reasons for that, not the least of which could have been my preconceived expectations... DAMN THOSE BASTARDS! They've ruined many a good show for me over the years, and it's a never-ending battle to keep them at bay.

Right, I looked up and reread
Right, I looked up and re-read your thoughts on the SFJazz set. Was pretty damn cool who joined you in attendance at that show.
I've only ever seen Dave Holland play a brief set, solo, unamplified on a standup bass. It was basically some kind of improv > Caravan (Ellington)... I'd see him play anything, but with Zakir Hussain, it seems like a great evening of music.
My thoughts on Chris Potter is similar to your take. I most recently saw him with Eric Harland and Reuben Rogers, one of the greatest rhythm sections working today, along with a younger keyboard player named James Francis (west coast dude who I think is somehow involved with that whole Kamasi Washington thing), I think my own preconceived notions got the better of me, too. Just completely underwhelmed.
That said I will never sleep on a bill with Jamie Francis on it, that guy was outstanding.
