Remember how McDonald's had those scratch-off games, and you'd win free food when the US won a medal? The entire Communist Bloc boycotted, and we won every friggin medal! A friend's sister worked there and gave me hundreds of tickets. I ate free for months.
I remember watching the 1984 opening ceremonies and seeing that guy in the jetpack and just thinking the future is going to be awesome, we will all have jetpacks.
I was living in the bay area at the time, I was able to go to a couple of the USA soccer matches at Stanford. I still have the little trinkets I purchased.
I wonder how long the Olympics will continue? I saw some photos of the sites in Rio recently, they look like it was abandoned 20 years ago. I think that Salt Lake City is about the only city in recent Olympic times that still use the venues on a regular basis.
They'll stick around, but you'll see the same few cities doing the hosting. Beijing has a Winter Games coming up, and they just did a Summer Games. LA is hosting in 2028.
It makes zero sense to build new venues and Olympic Villages that are never going to be used again.

I was 15, worked outside all day, rode my bike mikes a day and windsurfed until after dark, at which point I'd start partying. I was skinny as a rail.
Oh, to be young again...

The whole world plays soccer
The whole world plays soccer because it's cheap and you can play anywhere.
What Olympic sports facilities would the general public use?
