I invited Billy Strings to come fish at my place the next time he's in the area. Seems like the kinda kid that would actually take me up on the offer

of course, variety is the spice of life, right?

You just never know what's gonna swim by...

Is that a gar from your pond?

FullSizeRender_1.jpeg
even the mud sharks will take a fly on the swing

is that a gar from your pond?^^^^

Yup long nose gar...We live on the Seneca River and have a channel that loops through the property so get all kinds of fish swimming through, probably 20 different species over a season.

FullSizeRender_2.jpeg
here's a little bit bigger one. They get much bigger even

FullSizeRender_3.jpeg
of course imho the smallmouth offer some of the best battles of all warmwater species

Nice!!  I use my old blue bite leaders to catch pike here at home. Nothing worse then having your striper blitz invaded by a school of blues and not have a steel leader on hand...

Awesome pics, all!
I always appreciate learning fish names other than Trey, Mike, etc.

Fishcane, perhaps if you hosted an ECZJ fishing regatta and jam, Billy would have more reason to show up w/ his guitar. ;)

That fly is 15"s long for reference. Fish is tiger musky for those with curious minds. A sterile cross of a northern pike and a muskellunge created to control "scrap fish populations" so desirable species can thrive. Voracious predators, considered an apex predator in most waters. Do not put you fingers in its mouth.

We have them here and I've had them in the channel but haven't caught one yet... I'll get one eventually... but I don't try to hard

That's a lot of variety! I'm a skilled perch and bluegill angler, the others? Not so much. Keep the great pictures coming!

Love the "family affair" aspect. heart You are a lucky man!

Devils River Southwest Texas. Guide Kevin Stubbs. This country is something to see. Far more rugged than it appears. I was left feeling sympathetic from those who cross the Rio Grande and end up navigating through the beautiful, but harsh landscape.

Bull Trout from the legendary Blackfoot River in Montana. Think "A River  Runs Through it" Endangered species, requires cold clean water. Pretty aggressive, though not as fearless as a musky. I caught one that day that was trying to eat a whitefish I hooked. It latched on to the whitefish and would not let go so we had to net both. I have the photo somewhere.

Het Dise, perch and bluegill are some of my favorite freshwater fish to eat. Silver dollar filets, some seasoned flour and hot bacon grease..........drool!

^^^^^I Have a Super Old Bamboo Fly Rod from my grandpa

yes, do tell, I love hearing the old rods in the corner stories...I feel the mojo and connection to the past every time I fish one.

IMG_0001.jpeg

I have a bamboo fly rod that my dad brought back from Korea when he was in the war there, but I have never fly fished. My son does in Colorado and has gotten pretty good at tying flies

I need to resize my pics.

Big day today, I just got a mystery box from unfair lures that I bought for $99 bucks, they match the lures they send you to the zip code you live in. 14 lures in a nice box. Not a bad deal. Their Rip and Slash lures are the best backwater lures I have ever used.

Zoner Survey question.

Artificial or live bait?

I used to be 100% artificial, actually considered live bait as cheating. I have changed in my old age. I'm about 90% artificial and 10% live bait. It's the salt water that has changed me over.

Even though I'm really into fly fishing, I actually enjoy all disciplines, including bait. I used to try to be exclusive back when I thought I had something to prove but I got over it

It's been a couple of years since I've wet a line, but I always used flies or lures.

Depending on how many in the boat I will double dip if there is room. (1 live bait with a bobber, and throwing a lure)

Mostly lures but occasionally home grown worms dug from the garden.

Slow Pitch Jigging out performs Goggle eyes 5 to 1

While I have worked for 4 fly pubs, it's all fun to me :)

Due for a pic here...

AM (Ant) tangles with a beast up in "them thar hills" on a rare straight stretch of Manastash Creek, east slopes of the cascade range.

IMG_3227wc2 copy.jpeg.

I haven't fished since I lived in Wisconsin.  Every year there the DNR publishes the state catch limits. They also publish how much of each fish type you can eat before the level of mercury from eating those fish will become a cancer risk for youth and adults. Decades of burning coal for electricity production is the main cause of mercury in every one of their waterways. Can't imagine there's any clean water left anywhere in the US, especially the east coast and the midwest.   When I did fish, perch, bluegill, crappie, large and small mouth, rock, and striped bass, were all easily caught on live or artificial worms.  Live minnows for walleye.

>  Can't imagine there's any clean water left

There's clean water in the mountain creeks of the Eastern Sierra (where there's no grazing), and somewhat less so in the rivers they flow into.

>  a rare straight stretch of Manastash Creek

Nice looking creek. My kind of water.

IMG_2806.jpeg

I think my kid was trying to rub in the first catch of the day

We don't have much groundwater where I live, but Reyes Creek flows year round most years, and it's stocked with rainbows when it does.
