Bob Dylan Fox Theater-Oakland, CA June 11

Forums:

What a treasure to be able to see Dylan in good form at age 82. My first was the Street Legal tour at the Spectrum in 1978 .Solid show, heavy on his most recent material--new band with the great Charley Drayton on drums (Keef & Xpensive Winos).  Nice tip of the hat to Robert and Jerry with a Friend of the Devil encore.  As usual, new arrangements for the few old chestnuts he did.

Nice. I'll be at the Thursday show in LA.

We really enjoyed seeing him in Nov (same setlist, sans FOTD)

The new material has really grown on me.
As usual, his delivery did not disappoint.
He seems so fragile & small scuffling across the stage.
Yes his still seems as fierce as ever in his lyrical/contextual assessment of life.
I feel blessed.

Cam, totally agreed my wife said he seemed small and fragile shuffling across the stage--first time I felt this way about him but he was in good voice and spirits--played guitar only on the first song and keyboards the rest of the gig, as usual the last 10 years

I went to the shows Thursday and last night. Last night was a pretty amazing show even before the surprise ending.

I believe that was a present to the crowd to cap off three great nights.

It really was like it was 1999 all over again there for a few minutes.

First FOTD in 15 years. First set list change in 38 shows.

Pretty damn cool to hear.

I saw thursday and friday and he was getting better each night. Friday was really a sweet show, but man i woulda liked to see him do FOTD again. This goes in the worst didnt go to the show pile for me, i just couldnt convince my kid to go three days in a row although i am getting a lot of mileage out of the guilt trip.

I'm just here to support the visuals of that video

I don't understand how it got recorded. The poster said "my phone was in a pouch sorry if there like shifting noises". How do you start recording if it's locked up in a pouch?

He probably hit record right before getting to the pouch situation at the door. Some security people were checking the phones were off/mute, but I think most weren't.

It was also great to see Ramblin' Jack Elliot in the house on Saturday; he looked great.

Man what a bast those shows were.

Rene, that story truly pains me. I've been there. Maybe you should go to Santa Cruz or Sacramento. I'm going to Santa Cruz.

Have fun at the show Mike.

I saw it all at very close range. It was a very transcendent experience to see and to hear.

Different recording of FOTD that sounds much better. Not sure how they did it, but it doesn't sound like it's recorded in the locked pouch. Yes, it was a transcendent experience for sure!

I thought of that, and then I wondered where the rest of the show is. FOTD was the encore.

Roland! Long time, no see. And yeah, that recording is much better.

I imagine he didn't put the rest out because it sounds like shit!

Nice when that other one popped up this AM.

Heyya Mike Edweirds - it has been a while. I'm still searching for the sound and the music brought me here today once again.
Saturday's show was my first show since October 2019...when I also saw Mr. Zimmerman at that time. It was a wonderful welcome back to live music.

Nice. I went to a few shows early last summer, but them covid reared its ugly head again and put an end to that for a while. This year seems safer, so far, but I am kind of concerned about seeing Dylan indoors later this week. So far, all of my shows this year have been outdoors.

Oh, and there's a link to FLACs of the show posted on roland's most recent youtube link.

> Bless the tapers...

Amen to that.

They play a bit of the opening of the first movement from Beethoven's 9th Symphony through the PA before the band takes the stage. Is this part of Dylan's regular show these days, and if so, does anyone know the significance of it?

They've been playing it for about 25 years now.

Interesting. The last time I saw Dylan was at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds in 2001, and I'm pretty sure they didn't play it there.

For many years he had some verbal introduction "...Columbia recording artist, poet laureate of rock and roll blah blah blah..." and that stopped I think 5 or 6 years ago.  When I saw him in 2019, there was (to these uneducated ears) a different piece of classical music played, but I certainly could be wrong.

You're not wrong, roland, but I'm not sure what that piece from 2019 is. It kind of sounds like part of Holst's Planets.

As it turns out, I have one extra ticket (for face) for the Thursday's show at the Pantages in LA if anyone is in the area and interested. I need to mention though that I have it listed on Ticketbastard for resale, so I don't know how long it'll be available.

The verbal intro used to be over Aaron Copland's "Rodeo" or whatever it's technically called... Originally, it was just "Ladies and Gentlemen, Columbia Recording Artist, Bob Dylan!" but then they added the longer bio in the early 2000's. It's been 12 years since I saw a show, at that time they were still doing the intro but it was shorter, somewhere in the middle ground... I guess he's pared things down - used to play 2 set shows back then too...

Dylan first played Friend of the Devil in August of 1990. Merrilville, IN. I was there too! My Chicago days. He's played it about 100 times and now it seems to be back. Good shot of publicity off one song too!

Said to be from yesterday at Pantages in LA.

Last night Every Grain Of Sand resumed its slot as the show closer at the final LA show.

Last night's show was amazing. Best Dylan show I've ever seen.

I like hearing that Mike. It is amazing to take in. I'm going back for more next week in Sacramento

Shakey, amazing only begins to capture all that went down at he Pantages Thursday night. Here's my more verbose take on the show.

As I mentioned above, the last time I saw Dylan was in 2001, and to borrow a line from the bard himself, things have changed. The show I saw Thursday night was not a rock and roll concert in the conventional sense, but rather more of a theatrical performance that reminded me in ways of David Byrne’s American Utopia shows. And at one point, I whispered to my friend that what we were seeing had a real David Lynch vibe, the Black Lodge from Twin Peaks specifically, so it had a cinematic aspect too.

Every part of this performance was carefully choreographed. The lights. The staging of the band, their individual appearances, and the ways the players moved. The music itself was carefully arranged as well. I don’t think a single note seemed out of place from start to finish. This was really something to behold in its entirety.

The Pantages Theater is an old Art Deco jewel that was built in the 1930s and shines bright in 2022, unlike similar theaters from that time that have deteriorated into mere shadows of their former glory. Such a place was well-suited to the Rough and Rowdy Ways tour, which also seems to reflect that earlier era. The hat Dylan wore would have fit Al Capone just right. The staging is really very simple. From the left are the drums, bass, lead guitar, Dylan on piano (except for Watching the River Flow, for which he played guitar), rhythm guitar, and pedal steel guitar.

The band showed a lot of versatility. The drummer had a standard kit, but also had some floor toms that he played with mallets for a timpani sound at one point. The bass player had an electric strapped on at times, but also used a stand up bass, which he played with his fingers and a bow at one point at least. And the pedal steel player stood and played...something (a mandolin, maybe?)...during one song. The rhythm player also seemed to swap out instruments at times, and not just changing guitars, but it was kind of hard to discern exactly what he was up to given his position behind Dylan and his piano.

What struck me most about the music was the spaciousness of it all. If music is a way to sculpt with air, this band made sure to leave most of the air intact. The spaces between notes were immense at times, which had the effect of something like stark relief, where every sonic disturbance of the atmosphere could be noted and savored. And Dylan's voice was a revelation, with its growl, its rasp, its whine, and its sweetness and light all used to great effect.

I’m pretty knocked out by what I saw and heard the other night, and I’m thinking about trying to catch the show at the Santa Barbara Bowl next Wednesday, even though the setlist will be the same, and little, if anything will be changed. If you’re wavering about catching this latest incarnation of Dylan, set your doubts aside and go to the show. You will not be disappointed.

That's a great review! There is Bob Dylan and there is the rest of the music world. He stands alone as the greatest IMO.

nice review, i've seen dyaln at the pantages.

wasn't in the cards this round. i wanted to take my mom to the sd show. anyone see that one?

I want to mention here too that Bill Walton was in the house on Thursday. He was seated 10-15 rows in front of ours, but since this was not a dancing show (except for one gyrating young lady in the far left aisle for most of the show), Walton confined his upright, full-height, throw-your-hands-in-the-air boogying to right after a song finished.

And because this was Hollywood, I suppose, Perry Ferrell was also in attendance, and there were probably other famous types there that I failed to recognize.
