GD 12-29-88 // Oaktown

Forums:

The final time they played on the 29th of December. Setlist is '88 standard operating procedure but certainly a peppy and spirited effort.

I. Hell In A Bucket-> Sugaree, Minglewood Blues, Friend Of The Devil, Queen Jane Approximately, To Lay Me Down-> Let It Grow

II. Playin' In The Band-> Crazy Fingers-> Samson & Delilah-> Playin' In The Band Reprise-> Eyes Of The World-> Drums-> Space-> The Other One-> Stella Blue-> Throwing Stones-> Not Fade Away,

E: The Mighty Quinn

I was there.  Drove an auto-drive away west from Virginia with three friends, leaving on Christmas Day and getting to Palo Alto on the 27th.  It was my only GD New Years run.  The last time I saw them was closing out the Fall Tour at the Rainforest Action Network benefit  at MSG.  I recall these shows being solid, but haven't listened to them in a while.  1989-1990 is considered a latter era peak, so these shows are a prelude to that.

Was there, too!

Neville Brothers opener, if I remember correctly.

Think it was my second NY run.

II was there as well. The guy I was with knew a guy, so we got to sit in the VIP section behind the yellow tape. Woo-hoo. Second set was pretty hot as I recall.

fun couple of shows (didn't see the 31st). my buddy traded a sheet for a nye ticket. he also scored a nitrous tank, so we were crankin' balloons like crazy.

sadly, he passed away a few years ago. we saw our first show together (9-15-85, right between each of our birthdays), and many after.

the 28th was a much better show (imo).

i'd describe the Playin' Reprise as more of a Playin' Theme.

Add me to the list of those in attendance. This was my one GD New Years run.

Hundreds of Heads seemed content with the prospect of never actually seeing the band or hearing a note of music. Many hung out in the parking lot where the vending and partying went on non-stop.

^^^^ have to say, it always freaked me out a little to leave the coliseum all elevated from the music and then venture into the Oakland lots... but you had to go through it no matter what!

Fun to read that Relix story... I do remember thinking WTF, it's not supposed to be freezing out!

I did venture into each of this run of shows...although sometimes a bit late, I think Garcia was excited to play some songs more than others.

I remember Garcia playing extremely well...I think he suffered through some Weir selections knowing he would be playing with Melvin soon enough.

I'd be interested to know Phil's thoughts on Garcia's penchants for some songs more than others.

The New Years openers were Peter Apfelbaum and Hieroglyphics, followed by the Tom Tom Club.

never saw nye, but saw all these prior shows.

ripping.

remember how insane the sound was inside the venue during that 88-90 period?

12/29/88  has stood out in my min over the years. Great TLMD and Let it Grow. Set 2 is a barb burner. Had some friends fly out from back east. Good times. Reliving 12/30/86 as I type, man that '86 run was tits!

Worth saying three times Paul, Re: the '86 New Years run.

The first Comes A Time and Scarlet-->Fire since the coma, of course a much more comfortable venue than the Coliseum.....

Just a blast of a time. It was my first trip out to the Bay Area to see the band. I had tickets for the first three nights but not NYE. (Thankfully, I think that was the

weakest night of the run).

I tried hard to get a ticket all week but that proved impossible for me, and a couple friends. Tough ticket. I was not one of those people

"happy to be outside partying in the parking lot." Yes, Bill had the outdoor speakers on in the park across from the Kaiser and that was cool,

but it was the first show I'd ever been shut out from, and it was a shitty feeling. (Someone tried to sell me crack in that park; just another stark reminder of how much

better it was to be inside rather than outside).

Again, I'd just seen three very strong shows in a row, so I couldn't complain too much.
