Phil Lesh & Friends begins, 21 years ago.

Forums:

Yeah yeah, I know there were some shows before '99 that had the title "Phil & Friends" but that amazing three night run in April of 1999 at the Warfield Theater was the start of something special that continues to this day. It was the start of the thing that created the original Philzone, the reason we're all still here.

Long Live Phil Lesh!!!

Long Live the Grateful Dead!!!!!

Long Live Us!!!!!!!!!!!!!

when Phil had "Friends"...

Oops. I forgot that I had started basically the same thread a year ago, but when I think of that run I always think of the first two nights and sort of overlook the third night.

Those first two shows were so rockin' and so much better than I & my friends thought they would be, and overall they became a total celebration. It was a big three-day/night party with a bunch of friends each night and we celebrated pretty damned hard, so I was pretty burnt going into that third show, and then Days Between (never a favorite for me) coming right after a long Dark Star opener sort of took me down that night.

But listening to 4/17 again last night I was reminded just how good that opening segment was so I started the thread. That almost 30-minute Dark Star/It's Up To You opener is just so good I was compelled to share.

And again, I know there were "Phil & Friends" shows before '99, but they were one-offs like many other "... & Friends" shows over the years. The run in 1999 is special not just because the music was so good or that Phil was back and healthy, but looking back now those shows were the beginning of a new concept of ever-changing players, and a whole new career for Phil as a leader. A pretty successful concept and career I'd say.

Anyway, I'll probably start another thread about it next year.

One can hope.

After a few appearances with the Broken Angels, these would be his first "Phriends" Shows

I didn't realize that Scott A and Phil went back so far.   It was great seeing them play together in 2020.

You could start a thread every year about it lance. Its all good and a very pivotal moment in post Jerry GD history.  :)

.for me I always think of the 3rd night when I think of these shows. The relatively unknown kimock (compared to trey) was really given room to show his stuff 4-17

Long live Pl&F

<relatively unknown kimock>

not to the Deadheads in the Bay area, who I'm guessing made up the majority of the crowd. Trey was probably a little less familiar to the older folks who hadn't gotten into Phish.

Kimock had already been playing regularly in all the local hippie haunts for 15 years and been in-and-out of the near-Dead scene. (We knew what our guy could bring to the table.)

good call alan..although I saw kimock with the Other Ones 98 I wasn't really aware of him then when I flew to cali for the Greeks 99 I had definitely heard of him but still only through Phil and not really knowing anything about Zero up until then . I thought of myself as a semi serious Dead/Jerry tape trader at the time but the folks we stayed with in Sebastopol  and someone else we visited in the area both had racks and racks of Kinock tapes and I was blown away at this whole other world of Psychedelic guitar I had no idea about.  I quickly began collecting as much Kimock as I could get my hands on especially after the fantastic summer sessions run

He was impressive immediately.

< folks we stayed with in Sebastopol  and someone else we visited in the area  both had racks and racks of Kimock tapes>

Hey, that could have been me.... :-)

You made a good choice visiting there then.. Kimock happened to live in Sebastopol at that time..That was during the KVHW era and there was a strong fanbase there. The Powerhouse was the local bar and Bill the owner (RIP) brought in all kinds of good music. Studio E, a local recording studio who also produced a music cable TV show, hosted Kimock bands often.

There's a lot of nuggets in here among the average local acts, including:

Saw Kimock in the 80's a ton with Little Women. Never liked the band that much.....preferred seeing Band du Jour (hehe).

The powerhouse is where I saw DNB that weekend.  I was a packaging supervisor at Bells and I flew out with a case of some high gravity beers to share and some kindbud i was growing.I met dan Healy who was at the SBD and had a very good time that weekend. in fact I had so much fun that I flew out the next summer (2000) and saw Steve Kimock Band at the GAMH..but stayed in the city for those.

Then in spring '01 woound up staying at the same hotel as kimock/band in Chicago for the Martyrs shows and hooked his crew up with beer and a jar of nugs..'thanks steve'

My friend from Sebastopol is the one that hooked me up with the todd and lynette wedding kimock and friends tapes that includes the 'Sky Band ' filler..if you're in touch or know Steve maybe ask him and see what he remembers about the sky band sessions?

(the stage was low and the room so short that the projectors would have blinded the band, so we did a lightshow on the ceiling instead)

The Powerhouse also had a lot of Zigaboo shows and Johnny Otis hosted his KPFA radio show there on Sat mornings, too. Can't forget the Ace Cider Pub up the way who hosted some memorable DNB shows. OK no more reminiscing for me.. back to work...

Did you work there or with the band , maybe?  Alan what did you do with your old Kinock tapes..do you still have them? did you go to the Greek '99 shows?

^I think 4-21-98 Spring Water is the version that Ray sings "Crystal Water" instead. .

<Did you work there or with the band , maybe..>

Ha...Those Kimock bands could barely pay themselves, so work for the band... technically no. But we were big fans who liked to have fun and did our guerrilla light show gig often enough that promoters eventually hired us (or left us alone).

Probably like the TXR scene today (and the Peninsula in Long Live's day), in the 1990s, music-regulars and musicians living in the North Bay area (Mill Valley to Santa Rosa) sorta "knew" each other cause they lived in the same community and shared babysitters and weed dealers and cab-rides home and lines at the grocery store (and the San Rafael post office). It was still a big deal to run into Jerry at the 7-11, but Kimock was another story -- he was a local yocal like the rest of us ..and not much older. It wasn't too surprising that if you had a pretty roommate, you'd maybe stumble across Steve in your kitchen on a Sunday morning after a show. So it was a big present for Zero heads when Kimock and Phil started playing together regularly.

I'm sure I did those 99 shows, and yes still have my cassettes. And last I heard, T&L are still happily married.

>>>sorry to change direction of thread<<<

One should never apologize for that. A thread, like a good conversation (or good improv jam) should be free to flow it's own way. If it's a good conversation it usually comes back to the original topic, or not, but still maintains the nature of it.

Carry on.

Cool Alan good stuff and thanks for the input.

I still listen to my cassettes I have an old denon drw-840 I bought back in 94..srill works. I only wound up with a dozen or so kimock tapes because by the time I was ggetting into it everything was going to CD so I have a bunch on cdr

But archive has basically all of it and from the lip..which happens to be the name of the kvhw live album I bought at those SKB GAMH shows

Sorry it's KVHW - Life at the Lip
