Way too young. A major Jazz talent. With Roy Hargrove dying last year, this leaves Terence Blanchard as the last of the three great "young lions" trumpet players from their generation. He will be missed.

I heard about this earlier today. Very sad.
I was a fan and saw him many times. I called him "Fake Miles" because his style so closely resembled Miles Davis, which is no surprise since Roney was one of the very few musicians Davis mentored.
Just like a good fake Jerry I had no issue with Roney's style, because it's a great style, he was great with it and he made it his own.

Wallace Roney with Miles Davis' Second Great Quintet (Wayne Shorter on sax, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums) play "Walkin'" as part of a Miles Davis tribute, on an ABC special "A Celebration of America's Music", broadcast in December of 1996. This was about 2 months before Tony Williams' unexpected death.

Most of the Fake Jerrys, except maybe Kimock, didn't get mentored by Jerry.
OF course, Roney was a lot more than just a Miles knock-off. All those great albums he cut with his ex-wife, the now deceased Geri Allen.
One of my favorites over the last 30 years, off to the great gig in the sky.
