I'm not justifying Grace Slick's blackface, but her reasons are kind of classic Grace (I'm thinking of the time she got an invite to a party thrown by one of Nixon's daughters at the White House; Grace took Abbie Hoffman as her plus-one and allegedly brought a boatload of acid with her to spike the punch bowl).

The Dixie Dregs were way ahead of the curve on this. They dropped "Dixie" from their name about 40 years ago.

(But they were way better before they changed their name)

Just the big, meaningful, pragmatically relevant stuff...a band changing its name or the reasons for doing so probably don't qualify.

I try to only be outraged by actions and beliefs of others that do or could pose some sort of harm to other human beings life, liberty or pursuit of happiness.

If the Dixie Chicks want to make their personal statement or start their desired conversation by changing their name, I think they have that right and don't feel I'm expected to react strongly one way or the other. Certainly, though, the difference between Dixie and South should be pretty apparent, whatever you feel about that distinction.
