NEIL YOUNG

Coolest les paul tone ever and one of the greatest Canerican songwriters of all time, imo

I feel like his writing quality and relevancy is finally in a permanent decline after all these years judging by his last few albums, but u never know, and there's no shame in that as he had arguably a longer and/or better run than any other artist who started in the 60's.

seems like a bit of an obstinate, cantankerous, exhausting boomer these days but at least the muthafucka has integrity and maybe that's just what the world needs and/or deserves right now.

I respect the shit out of him

Great movie. Lots of never before seen footage from the ranch, studios and Nashville and London. The gear in use was cool to see. See it on Sunday if you're able.

New interview with Neil in which he discusses his songwriting process for his new album.

More Barn!

i dislike a man needs a maid.

^^^^ Thanks Turtle

...if one ignores the lyrics, the composition and performance is powerful... but how can you ignore the lyriics?

otherwise, I adore Neil's music.

World's greatest Canadian ever.

I feel like driving over the hill today to see that beautiful countryside and turtle a man needs a maid always makes me cry because I love it so much

right on pat

and I was thinking about the Symphony juxtaposed to what Bob, we were just in Washington, with the assistance of that Stanford music professor must've been a shit ton of work

ha!
aiq, I love u and Manassas as much as, if not more than, the next guy but u can shut yo damn mouth with that nonsense! Lol

I agree, Stills a better guitar player. Neil better writer

Nobody wails better than Neil that's just one man's opinion

feedback matters as does distortion turn it up to 10 and go ask Jimi Hendrix

Young has one of, if not, the coolest and most distinct electric guitar tones in all of rock and y'all in here dranking from the stills?

I got in with a fake ID to see him at the Catalyst.  For those who aren't familiar with the venue, it's basically a large club sized joint and was an impossible ticket, but somehow I got one.

Neil had taken the stage just before I walked in and I'll never get the image of him jamming there, in the flesh, right before my eyes.  It was one of the highest highs of any musical experience I've ever had.

Flash forward a few decades in which I had seen him play many times.  He was doing a mini-residency in Fresno and we had droven 6 plus hours round trip to see him, only to get an hour and twenty minute show of songs played basically right off the record.  I won't say it was the lowest low (actually, not even close), but compared every other Neil experience I had had, it was a huge letdown.

Hope old shakey keeps rockin', and that our part of the world remains relatively free.

I'm Canadian. No one cares.

yea it's pretty decent, I am more a fan of his writing then any particular guitar work of his although it's always good...I haven't checked him out live since 95-6, last time I saw him was Crazy Horse the night after the Clifford Ball.

Got married under a harvest moon and the band we hired learned and performed the song for us

i love neil.

but to see who the better guitarist is, well....who is better on acoustic?

hall you are lucky, i think i was still under 21 during that run./and or just got busy...

"If I was ever going to teach a master class to young guitarists, the first thing I would play them is the first minute of Neil Young’s original ‘Down by the River’ solo . . . It’s one-note, but it’s so melodic, and it just snarls with attitude and anger. It’s like he desperately wants to connect. Neil’s playing is like an open tube from his heart right to the audience.” - Trey Anastasio.

my older brother rolls his eyes at the mention of his name

glad I don't listen much to his advice when it comes to music

Telluride a few years back with Promise of the Real was magic!!!

Anyone see the Landing on Water Tour?

>Anyone see the Landing on Water Tour?

Yes, I saw the 'In a Rusted Out Garage' tour in 1986 with Crazy Horse. Roadies dressed as rats, remote control cockroaches, angry neighbor...oh yeah, 2 sets of Neil & CH tearing it up. I remember the 2nd set started with a few tunes from Trans, which didn't go over that well, neither did the newer ones, but it was quite intense overall, with lots of jamming.

This

Hey Hall, I'm guessing that was the a stray gators that you saw inside the catalyst?

they were mentioned in the movie

He ain't singing for Pepsi, Coke or Miller.

About ten years ago,

Me: Telling my then 3 year old not to worry about the dentist, "don't be scared, everyone goes to the dentist"

My 3 year old: "Even Neil Young goes to the dentist?"

Doesn't have a lot of chops but is somehow one of the great guitar players.

Words sometimes hit the mark, sometimes not.

Excellent melody writer.

Saw this show at the Cow Palace it was excellent but not quite sa good as the Rust Never Sleeps tour which it mimicked. Good shit regardless.

I saw Neil and Crazy Horse at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz on 5-9-96.

It's freaking Neil playing in what is essentially a bar...too much.

I clearly remember they had a digital clock onstage, and when they were ending with

a 20 minute Down By the River, I was going, no way is he going to wrap this up on time.

Basically right when it hit 11:00 or 11:30, can't remember, he abruptly but cleanly ended the song.

Curfew met.

(We had seen him in March at Old Princeton Landing, which of course was so insane it made the Catalyst seem almost like a civic center).

Then on my birthday of that year in September we saw them at Cal-Expo, reserved show, if you can picture that at Expo. Very weird. 5th row.

He blew by the curfew at that meltdown show by 40 minutes, causing so many neighbors to freak out that Sacramento changed their noise ordinance!

In a rusted out garage was a fun show and great memory.   I was 14 and went with my brother to Madison Square Garden. Neil called the exterminators because of the roaches.  They came and sprayed  fog.  The fog cleared and they removed their respirator/masks and revealed themselves. David Crosby and Gram Nash. The crowd went ballistic!  Then together played Only Love Can Break Your Heart and Ohio. I was floored seeing so many of my heroes at once for the first time.  It was also the first show I saw spinners and people getting naked.  11 months later I saw my first Grateful Dead show in that same building.  My goodness those were good times.

Loved him all my life but only saw him in Central Park 10 years ago.

ttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY5s_8ZU_0Q&t=1239s

I also saw that garage band tour in Phoenix .It was great. Neil billed Crazy Horse as the third best garage band. He said the Stones were the best and somewhere???, there was one better garage band.

I love Neil, have since I first heard him. That tone, and Crazy Horse. And yes, that first minute of Down by the River.

Oh my.

Not to beat a dead crazy horse or anything but I'm seeing a lot of talk about technique and acoustic guitar playing that makes me feel the need to reiterate that this man has achieved, without the aid of fancy pedals, one of the greatest guitar tones of all time and in terms of the Les Paul there really isn't even any room for debate and he did it by EQing amps in extreme ways no one would have the balls to even attempt.

I strongly encourage everyone to read that article I posted at the beginning of this thread that goes into detail on that.

Even apart from that, if u really need to discuss acoustic, Any of y'all ever check the alt tuning and chord shapes for 'don't let it bring u down'?

Guy was messing with drop C before that was even a thing.

he's pulled from a deck that didn't even exist.

Maybe some of y'all muthafuckas need a maid

I saw the Rusted Out tour at Great Woods. It was one of the first concerts at the new venue and security was ill-prepared for that crowd. By set II the back fences had been pulled down and turned into bonfires all over the lawn. People brought in cases of booze and bottles were being handed out. It really was a perfect match to the stage set.

I love Neil dearly, but he became one of the purveyors of high priced tickets starting with the Greendale tour and I think he believes his own bullshit too much these days........

Nobody is lowering the rent in 2023.

All good Furious.  I am old enough that Buffalo Springfield was contemporary when I was in jr. high.  Loved Neil and Steven.

Just having a bit of fun.

I know you are still bringing the music and I will always have great remembrances from ECZJ III.

stills has a better voice and is a better player.

but he's not the writer niel is.

steve stills doesn't change keys or tunings?

don't worry i still love the grungefather.

Neil Young goes record shopping, finds his own bootlegs (1972)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-3rFhXVrvI

That's a fun film. ^^^^

>>>>stills has a better voice

Not any more.  His voice is shot.

A few years back, my wife said to me something like, "I think you like Neil Young better than the Dead." I don't know about that, but at times I listen to him more.

>>>>Nobody is lowering the rent in 2023

A frightening truth, I fear I'll b priced out of the entire west coast at some point.

what good is saving the earth when the rules r so bent I can't even afford the rent to live on it.

where's my farm aid type benefit concert?

>>>> I know you're still bringing the music

my brother in sound, I don't even know how to stop

>>>>stills is a better player

turtle, so help me god, if I wasn't broke just from paying rent I would buy u a maid just to make u uncomfortable and I'd pay her extra to remind u frequently that u, and every man, needs one

>>>stills is a better player<<<

Oh. Ho, Ho.... Hoooo HOOOOO HAAAAAHAAHAAAA!!!!!

Oh, damn. Thanks Turtle. I've been sttruggling lately, I really needed a good laugh.

I like Stills just fine, but........

OH!!!! HAAAHAAHAAA!!!!

Thanks Turtle!

you guys like harmonica?

I could do without the organ thingy he plays occasionally

The new album 'World Record' isn't very Crazy Horse-y at all. I mean, there's effing accordion all over this record. Neil said he came up with the songs while whistling as he goes for his daily walk, and that's pretty much what it sounds like. I'm surprised he didn't cover Monty Python's 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life'. Would've fit right in. Keep on whistling in the free world, Neil.

It's pretty damn pedestrian but at least Chevrolet gets a little crazy with the horse and this old planet is growing on me a little bit

>>>>>one of the greatest Canerican songwriters of all time, imo

Have you even heard Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morriset?

U oughta know I'm only familiar with Neil young, the McKenzie brothers and pop sensation Bryan Lacroix

Gordon Lightfoot

Joni.

I see none of y'all hosers have mentioned Robbie Robertson and while, sure, he probably stole the majority of the songs from his band mates that he's taken writing credit for, but who else is gonna bring u a broken arrow?
Plus he co-wrote Clapton's 'it's in the way that u use it'

Check and mate, joni lightfoot

Waiting for a miracle- Bruce Cockburn
