saw cheap tickets to John Wayne Int airport and saw San Diego is not far of a drive.
then googled collecting sea shells in socal and could visit each recommended beach in a week
maybe drive up to Alpine for the day too
my question:
where is a good affordable place to stay with good eats
anywhere from Laguna Beach south to the border

hi, i live 30 mins so of the airport. it is normally more expensive than the big ones, but a much better experience. If you found cheap tix, that's great.
when do you plan on coming?
it's a pretty big area...kinda a lotta options...as far as cheap? not sure you will find it.
do you want to stay by the airport kinda? or more towards SD?
keep in mind logistics of getting around. traffic so bound to SD on non-winter weekends is brutal.
please leave what little shells there are in place. :)
finally did the Heritage BBQ, was pretty good....not cheap.

Thanks for the reminder about traffic Turtle. Had forgotten to factor that in.
I'm seeing Dana Point hotels across from the beach for $104 a night
I liked Encintas the time I visited.
Sailboat friends love Mission bay.
Coronado is a place I've read about but haven't seem
It's a whim so probability is at 80/20% right now

it's a nice area for sure and
it's a nice area for sure and you technically can walk X the street for the beach. Doheney st. park/beach is there.
nearby San Juan Capistrano has a pretty big food scene, as bss indicated.
do not waste your $ on olamendi's nearby. terrible and expensive.
raining/windy here today. March could still be rainy, could be nice, never know.
encinitas/solana area in general is really nice/laid back.
i can't help with SD/coronado proper really. but the pt loma area is beautiful
feel free to reach out if needed

Damn what happened to Ola
Damn, turtle, what happened to Ola Mendis? Used to be amazing (but I haven't been there in 30 years or more). I'd say avoid Las Brisas in Laguna Beach, their food tastes like TV Dinner with cilantro on top..bland and kind of gross. Nice view though.

At low tide you can find rocks - the days of sea shells are gone
Any reason you're going to Alpine - there's no there there

Olamendi's blows chunks as
Olamendi's blows chunks as does pretty much any dining at or near the beach. People will still come, they don't need to have good food and don't care. Ola's is super $$$ and just not good.
Alpine, is charming I guess, not much there but you can get a great Julian apple pie but can elsewhere in SD as well.
Catalina, is a tourist deal...I'd recommend getting a golf cart to cruise in. The casino/ballroom is pretty amazing. Maybe a tour to the other side of the island would be fun as is the boat ride over, but again...$$ shitty tourist restaurants. Water is nice but will be about 60 degrees that time of year. The botanic garden is pretty
And yeah Anza could be nice with the Spring blooms.

Best value for lodging in SD
Best value for lodging in SD is Navy Lodge on North Island if you have an in. Also has a nice private beach where you can sometimes watch the all buds kids get smoked lol. North Beach/Dog Beach in Coronado is nice enough but good beaches are plenty and Coronado is otherwise just residential neighborhoods and overpriced bars. Straight down the strand; I can vouch for Don Pancho's tacos in Imperial Beach.
Lost abbey tasting room is pretty good if you're into that
try to catch a show at the belly up, it's a great venue
Taylor guitars (Nelson plays one!) in El Cajon has tours on fridays

Just my two cents but drive
Just my two cents but drive into North County and just relax. Hang in Del Mar, Solana, Carlsbad. Eat tacos, swim in the water.
