I hate to throw Weir under the transgression bus by mere assumption but can't imagine anyone else in the band would have pioneered this bizarre switch.

Being that it first happened in 77 (11/4?) I would chalk it up to experimentation.

It's actually easier to do the rhythmic switch that way than in the usual order.

Granted...very good point. Within the righteous order of all things Darwin, outliers do exist. 

Such as the 'classic' Eyes-Samba-Estimated trifecta. Good Samba btw.
