We played an '81' party a few years back w/them and they were calling themselves the 'all new blue cheer'(or something close). It was comical/sad. The manager--I guess the guy that owns the name is literally a cartoon character. The guys in the band were cool enough but all in all a weird night as the manager was making demands as though they were rock stars.
Ken; I’m uncertain as to the precise arrangement between Owsley, Gut, and the band. Or rather, I don’t think there was one. Probably more of an association/understanding of sorts (this was 1965). Gut owned a head shop in San Francisco called Joint Ventures, which served as something of a gathering place for heads and also doubled as a practice pad for the band. This was right around the time of what was or would become the acid tests, and he was a prankster. Gut’s association with bill graham and Chet helms went back to the mime troupe days, and he was able to plug the band in as a result. Kind of a product of a hybrid of several really pretty extreme lifestyles in a rapidly changing era. (Submariner, HA, prankster)
Blue Cheer - chances are if you saw em live, yer now dead. Only ancient crustys like ourselves even know about that killer band. You know yer crust when - Watched jeopardy the other night, they had a contemporary music category, I couldn't offer up any answers, I never heard of any of them. Not a one

My dad’s in pretty rough shape but he’s still sucking wind and, while never a huge Fan of the the dead, saw blue cheer a couple times in the 60’s and recalls them as one of the more impressive bands of the era.
The guitarist I currently work with is in his mid 30’s and loves them.
Just the other day he hipped me to randy Holden, the guitarist from their third album and of bands sons of adam and the other half, who some even credit with practically inventing doom metal.
apparently he’s even playing a one off at the whiskey a go go tomorrow.

I wish I had seen them. They are often regarding as the first "heavy metal" band and the first band to hold the title of "world's loudest."
Also managed by Owsley and named after one of his lines of acid.

Ah, that's right. Don't know why I thought Owsley managed them, but he did have some other connection with the band, maybe as their sound engineer?
