Berkeley, California

Forums:

Just spent a four day weekend down in the East Bay.  We were there for a wedding, but between all that and visiting friends and family in the area, still found time on Sunday afternoon to play tourist in Berkeley and hit up some of the used record shops.   Between having to dodge vomit and bum fights on Telegraph, all the grads in the caps and gowns on the campus, and the ubiquitous Nepalese restaurants, it was an interesting microcosm.

We had lunch at the Imperial Tea Court and dinner one night at Cha-Ya, both on Shattuck's "gourmet ghetto."   What's up with the long lines at that Cheeseboard pizza place?    Wanted to check out a few other restaurants and delis but there was only so much time.

Tried to make it over it to the Greek Theater but again ran out of time.   Is that place locked up when not in use?  Never saw a show there but would at least like to see the venue first hand next time I am in town.

local institution, perhaps the most overhyped pizza place of all time

artichoke bassile is right down the street from that rasputins and their plain slices or sicilian pies are 100x better than anything cheeseboard could ever hope to make

in general oakland and SF have better food than berkeley - while there are some serious gems, the massive population of woo-woo hippies in  berkeley combined with overzealous regulation really stifles berkeley's food scene. overall its a great town and still has better food than most of america - but the difference in culture and less oenerous regulations in neighboring towns makes a noticeable difference IME...especially when you are driving all over the bay trying different restaraunts and checking out the newest hypebeast spots.

First Q show I saw was the 2001 greek run (Phil Lesh Day in Berkeley)

I've wandered into the greek before a few times other than shows, at least twice during graduation, and we kind of had to talk our way past the student security that was trying to restrict people to students and family.  Hope they do not lock it, it is a beautiful place, show or no show.

beRzeRklEy will never be the same since Spengers closed.

Course I hardly get down there at all any more.

my grandpa used to bartend there when my mom was a kid.

its been owned by a major restaurant chain for awhile now...outdated food with a significant drop in quality. it sucks knowing a part of my family history is officially gone, but in truth spengers has been dead for years.

Cool I just listened to the 89 Greek run this weekend. Back in 99, my first time in California and the Greeks for Phil and Kimock August shows, and again in 02 for more Phil, we parked in the upper lot. In 1999 I was fortunate enough to be able to watch/listen to the soundcheck, Phil sang 'Wild Horses',  from the upper lot you can see the venue.  Just drive up that hill ken there's parking.

Also saw Furthur shows there in 2013.

Weird to think I've been 'zoning' 20 years now.

Lived around the corner from Cheeseboard for a number of years. Loved it.

Cool -  Berkeley Be Beautiful

Gotta love the name of that record shop.

Haven't spent much time on that side of the Bay.  Went to a decent bakery there.  Saw where Da Boy rides his moooooooooooootor-sickle in Berkeley Hills.

That might be my favorite picture of Phil I've ever seen. Looks like he got into Jerry's blow stash (in addition to the 10 Heinekens) before the show.

I was born in Berkeley, left when I was 2 and moved back in 1968 for a tumultuous year and a half. I've spent a lot of time there, especially in the last 3+ years and there actually is good food there. Tacubaya food is delicious, Poulet has wonderful chicken takeout, Soop in north Berkeley on Shattack is a large selection of soups for counter pick-up with space to sit, and Kirala2 -takeout (sushi) is there, too. Kirala (sit down) is good Japanes food.  Excellent Chinese food just over the border into Albany at China Village on Solano (I've only had takeout). Iyasare is a wonderful, inventive Japanese restaurant on 4th St. Worth checking these out.

Roarshock, is the bridge near Oxford?

Always thought Berkeley had great Thai.

Had dinner at Chez Panisse once, was a pretty nice experience....I assume it is still there on shattuck.

The Bridge is on campus just upstream from the Eucalyptus Grove.
