An iconic show 47 years ago today. Heard it was a scorcher. Thom, did it get hot in that cardigan? :) How about that Dark Star > El Paso?

Is there any all-time versions of songs in this show? I've heard it a bunch, and it makes a lot of best-ever lists, but it seems to me several other 72 shows (Europe particularly) are just as good if not better. Am I wrong?

The sun stroke serenaders

This shows footage of the crew. Parish is wearing a Jerry t-shirt. Is Kidd Candelario still alive? Bear makes a cameo too.

I've only been there on the DVD, but I'm sure the sweater wouldn't have made the trip.  Brutally hot by all accounts.

I'd agree that there are better versions of most of the songs, but this has a complete vibe to it that transcends the music alone.  The best Dead shows were always about more then just the music.

I always thought of this as the last of the great freak Dead shows, a great example of what they wanted their scene to be, a true extravaganza held just as they were entering the world of success and all the problems it brought with it.  It's amazing that we have a video record of this concert.

I LOVE that they show Paul Foster in that clip.

I was 20 that day, but of course on the right coast, it would be years before I ever heard the show. As Thom points out not the best, but historically important in GD lore

>>>Is Kidd Candelario still alive<<<

Yes he is. I think he has some sort of guitar strings/cords business, but I could be wrong about that.

He's often at TxR, and hard to miss when he's there.

hot day - just like in Eugene today

>> but it seems to me several other 72 shows (Europe particularly) are just as good if not better. Am I wrong?

No

More than several as I hear it...

Don't forget 8/28/82, another wonderful day of Grateful Dead music and friends. And it was another hot day, just like today.

>>>>>there are better versions of most of the songs, but this has a complete vibe to it that transcends the music

I would say "there are better versions of most of the songs, but this music has a complete vibe to it that transcends the songs".

And 8/28/82 was the debut of "Day Job"!

Day Job and West LA Fadeaway, too.

I know that I'm in the distinct minority, but I always loved Day Job and was sad to see it retired.  And good up tempo beat and some practical advice to boot, what's not to like?

82 Veneta was one of my favorite shows, location had a lot to do with it...   i've done long reviews here before so i'll spare ya, but I agree w/ Thom, always liked Day Job, and that first version was a blast to dance to!

When I listen to '82 Veneta I'm always transported to a sunny day, crisp music, great (local) place, lovely time. That Day Job was great!

>>>Yes he is. I think he has some sort of guitar strings/cords business, but I could be wrong about that.

Would've been cool if he was on a Weir Here episode at TRI. Parish was there quite a bit and I'd like to hear Kidd's stories instead of Parish shouting everyone down with his takes.

It's neat how many of the Dead's roadies also became popular figures. Could you imagine when that motley crew came rolling into an arena coked to the gills? Holy shit I bet the promoters and venue staff went running for cover.

^^^I posted the link above, druba. It is great footage. Also check out the Bertha opener from the show.

There was also a veneta show scheduled for August 92 but was cancelled along with the fall tour

^^^^ we had tickets for the '92 show  :(

This was in dexter Oregon

A 2012 trip never materialized to my knowledge

Sorry for the double post (but worthy, lol).  A reggae band I was in was the first to play at the alternative show in 92 at Conde(?) lumber.  3 days of music to make up for the dead cancelling at Veneta

Stanford Daily article about showing of 'unreleased' film Sunshine Daydream (8-27-72)

I wonder where the band slept that night after the Veneta gig?  I could just image them sitting around a campfire in the parking lot after the gig still coming down from the acid, drinking some cold Rainer beers that the roadies kept on ice for them and talking about how fucking hot it was that day.  Babbs cracking everyone up describing what they had to do to get the naked guy down from the pole and Ramrod and Rex doubling over in laughter as Parrish talks about how the sewage truck was spraying shit water on the crowd.

After a hearty dinner cooked up over the fire by MG and Donna and a few fat spliffs that Kruetzmann had tucked away in his boot gets passed around, a stoned out Bobby fiddles with his acoustic guitar and plays everyone his demo version of the Weather Report Suite as the rest of the guys stare deep into the dancing fire completely in awe of what they just heard.  As the moon creeps across the sky and the earth finally cools down, Bob and a nice girl he met that morning recuse themselves and head back to their tent.  Phil finishes the last beer and says good night leaving only Jerry, Rock, Kesey and Keith still awake to talk about how great the New Riders sounded and all agreed that the day turned out to be just exactly perfect.  Rock says it reminded them of the parties they use to have up at Olompali back in the day.  A couple of hours later as dawn breaks and the sky starts to turn a whiter shade of pale, Jerry picks up Bob's acoustic guitar and starts strumming the opening chords to a new song Hunter faxed him the other day called Wake of the Flood.   The sound of the hollow guitar wakes up Kesey's daughter and she shuffles out from the tent rubbing the sleep from her sunburnt eyes.

Ken looks up and says, here comes Sunshine.

Does anyone know the story behind the cancelled 8-27-72 Santa Barbara Bowl show/why or when it was they decided to play Veneta instead?
