Sad to hear this. I got to meet Raul a couple of times when he came to shop for records in my store, the first time when he was playing the Neptune Theatre with the Mavericks and the second when he was just passing through town. He liked to collect records and was an easily relatable down to earth person who obviously loved sharing music.

At 60, a life too short, still well-lived.

Damn. He was a true crooner,

Damn. He was a true crooner, and the Mavericks were such a cool band. They seamlessly blended roots rock, country and Latin into a raucous but very refined sound, and Malo led the way with his brilliant voice.

I saw them at the Fillmore 25-30 years ago knowing nothing about them walking in, it remains one of the best shows I've ever seen in that venue.

A friend of mine who worked for MCA records for a long time and spent time with him over the years is really broken up today. He said Malo was one of the nicest and most genuine people he ever worked with and they had remained friends.

Gone early, but lived well.
