>>>>Long Live the King

I have watched ever episode of the Crown and can therefore say with authority that King Charles III is a royal douche.

I think my mom will probably weep when she hears this news.

My own reaction is more mixed. I think Liz was seen by many as an institution as much as a person, and she kind of defined a certain kind of cool for a time a long time ago. But it's one of her greatest virtues--her steadfastness--that also rendered her an anachronism. Life is funny like that sometimes.

RIP Queen Elizabeth. So what's Camilla's job title now?

"The Queen Consort" according to an official press release from Buckingham Palace today.

Her Majesty is a pretty nice girl
But she doesn't have a lot to say
Her Majesty is a pretty nice girl
But she changes from day to day

I wanna tell her that I love her a lot
But I gotta get a belly full of wine
Her Majesty is a pretty nice girl
Someday I'm gonna make her mine, oh yeah
Someday I'm gonna make her mine

I wonder if she was anyones spirit animal, might make the funeral interesting!

Noodler, are you suggesting there will be floral tributes, the bells of London pealing, a gun carriage procession, and old Liz laid out like a buffet?

In this instance, i'm a man of faith!

The Queen Is Dead / Take Me Back to Dear Old Blighty

The Smiths

Farewell to this land's cheerless marshes
Hemmed in like a boar between archers
Her very Lowness with her head in a sling
I'm truly sorry, but it sounds like a wonderful thing

"I say, Charles, don't you ever crave
To appear on the front of the Daily Mail
Dressed in your Mother's bridal veil?" Ooh, ooh, ooh
And so I checked all the registered historical facts
And I was shocked into shame to discover
How I'm the 18th pale descendant of some old queen or other

Oh, has the world changed, or have I changed?
Oh, has the world changed, or have I changed?
As some 9-year-old tough, who peddles drugs
I swear to God, I swear, I never even knew what drugs were
Ooh, oh-oh, ooh

So I broke into the Palace with a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said, "Eh, I know, and you cannot sing"
I said, "That's nothing, you should hear me play the piano"
We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry
And talk about precious things

But when you're tied to your Mother's apron
No one talks about castration, ooh, oh-oh, ooh
We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry
And talk about precious things
Like love and law and poverty, ooh-ooh
(These are the things that kill me)

We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry
And talk about precious things
But the rain that flattens my hair, ooh
(These are the things that kill me)
All their life, they make love and then pierce through me

Pass the Pub that saps your body
And the church who'll snatch your money
The Queen is dead, boys
And it's so lonely on a limb

Pass the Pub that wrecks your body
And the church all they want is your money
The Queen is dead, boys
And it's so lonely on a limb

Life is very long when you're lonely

Life is very long when you're lonely

Life is very long when you're lonely

Life is very long when you're lonely

Funny stuff.

I asked my mom what she thought about Camilla becoming the Queen Consort. Her response cracked me up: "Pretty funny way to say slut."

What does the Queen receive from the government?

For 2021-2022 the Sovereign Grant was set at £86.3m - equivalent to £1.29 per person in the UK

Worthless parasites.

While I too find monarchies an outdated relic, Queen Elizabeth II seems to have been a decent person, who was thrust into a role she would rather have not had as a 25 year old young mother when her father died young, and ably performed her job with dignity and grace for 70 years.  She was still on the job less than two days before her death, as she met with incoming prime minister Liz Truss to confirm her position.  A remarkable life.

This is a great story about her that gives a glimpse of her character:

Sure, she was wonderful...

From what I read, there is disagreement over whether the girls were abandoned or hidden.  Either way, not a pretty story, but most families have a few skeletons in the closet.

Let those without sins cast the first stone.

I'll let the British themselves decide if they were parasites or not.  They mostly seemed to adore her and the form and function of their monarchy.

Why not ask the Irish or the Indians.

Again, fuck her.

She is the darkness.

But you're free to admire that POS, Dave.

Is it the individual or the institution that is the darkness?

What about King Charles advocacy for the environment and climate change action, or his Prince's Trust that helped 50,000 disadvantaged entrepreneurs start their own businesses?

It's not all so black and white.

Were these programs funded with the money they stole from the British people?

Hell, give me 86.3 million pounds and i could be a prolific philanthropist.

> Is it the individual or the institution that is the darkness?

How do you separate the two in a monarchy, whether it's constitutional or otherwise? They're like two sides of a coin.

^^It's both, Dave.

A true servant of the people would disband the monarchy during their rule

^yes

Give Ireland back to the Irish
Don't make them have to take it away
Give Ireland back to the Irish
Make Ireland Irish today

Great britian you are tremendous
And nobody knows like me
But really what are you doin'?
In the land across the sea

Tell me how would you like it
If on your way to work
You were stopped by Irish soliders
Would you lie down, do nothing
Would you give in, or go berserk

Give Ireland back to the Irish
Don't make them have to take it away
Give Ireland back to the Irish
Make Ireland Irish today

Great Britian and all the people
Say that all people must be free
Meanwhile back in Ireland
There's a man who looks like me

And he dreams of God and country
And he's feeling really bad
And he's sitting in a prison
Should he lie down do nothing
Should he give in or go mad

Give Ireland back to the Irish
Don't make them have to take it away
Give Ireland back to the Irish
Make Ireland Irish today

Give Ireland back to the Irish
Don't make them have to take it away
Give Ireland back to the Irish
Make Ireland Irish today

Today was cold and damp here so it was a good day to stay inside. Changed guitar strings and listened to some renaissance music. John Dowland created some really beautiful music 500 years ago.

John Dowland was a peer of Shakespeare. Paul O'dette is the best at playing his music. Dowland wanted the court lutenist gig with Queen Elizabeth but could never get it. He eventually went to the court of the King of Denmark.

I took some time the review the monarchy's time line. Interesting progression.

First off, to say that if the Queen cared about the people she would have disbanded the monarchy really shows a lack of understanding of the system. Seventy-five percent of Brits are royalists. The monarch is not only head of the nation and Commonwealth, they are also head of the Church. The monarchy is intertwined in the culture, and it one that a majority stand behind.

In my opinion, she is as a good person in a shitty system, one which is way bigger than any one person. She presided over the transformation from empire to commonwealth. In the 90s she started paying taxes. She literally gave away every semblance of her autonomy for the position. Why? Because she was queen. The royalty may be fucked up. Her family may be fucked up. She wasn't a bad person.

The monarchy doesn't "steal" from the British people. I think you could actually do a cost/ benefit analysis a find that it works out okay for the Brits. The other day I was doing some research. The official cost is £104 million. The vast majority of that goes to the salaries of all the people who support the royals, from groundskeepers to security. They are employing a ton of people and paying well. That money is going  ack into the economy,  not to offshore accounts.

The monarchy also brings in a shit ton of tourism money and supports the industry surrounding it, from souvenir shops to hotels to restaurants. Without the pomp and circumstance of an acting monarchy, there would be less tourism. People love the changing of the guard, the Crown Jewels, Beefeaters, Windsor Castle, etc. There's a romance that attracts tourists.

So yeah, it's fucked up to have some fairytale monarchy in 2022. It's fucked up at what it costs. It also employs a ton of people, brings in  who knows how much in tourism, and it also brings a sense of unity. Whether labor or conservative, most Brits are united under the Crown. Lots of countries spend stupid amounts of money on stupid shit. At least the Brits get something in return.

The Queen, or King, is the physical embodiment of the monarchy brian

they are quite literally inseparable. No lack of understanding here.

The rest is just money money money jobs trade commerce blah blah

"We will not blame him for the crimes of his ancestors if he relinquishes the royal rights of his ancestors;

but as long as he claims their rights, by virtue of descent,

then by virtue of descent, he must shoulder the responsibility for their crimes"

-James Connelly, 1911, on the King's visit to Ireland

I understand the system, and I stand by my opinion. Despite how the majority of Brits feel, I disagree. fortunately I live in a county which fought a revolution to rid ourselves of those parasites.

Yes, the money is stolen, just like the land and all the jewelry.  Charles is exempt from the inheritance tax. William made out well too, he Inherited over 1 billion pounds in land, buildings, etc. The former queen also protected her pedophile son.

Fuck those parasites.

Lol go ask India how they feel, they number about a billion and a half (if we're counting opinions)

But you think the king gonna give em that diamond back?

Are they any worse than Bezos? That guy is worth close to $100 billion, made off the backs of cheap labor in Asia and horrid working conditions, pay, and benefits for his employees.

Of course he's not giving the diamond back. He's King of England.

Bezos is horrid too. But the royals crimes span centuries. If you're comparing the royals to another POS, you've lost the argument.

Charles is widely unpopular and the country's increasing financial woes will help undo the BS monarchy within a few-several years anyway. Hail the Queen! LOL. The Brits are suckers for paying for this shit show for too many years as it is. The only Bezos comparison is that he pays nearly zero taxes, treats commoners like dirt, and benefits from being rich.

No argument, we all agree on the absurdity onf the monarchy. What we disagree on is the level of outrage over it. To me, in the general scheme of ridiculous wealth, entitlement, waste, spending, and whatnot, it's on par with plenty of other crap. At least the Brits enjoy it and it brings in some money.

>she is as a good person in a shitty system<

The queen was not supportive of Diana's work with AIDS and leprosy patients and encouraged her to work on "something more pleasant."

Sure, she was swell.

>>>Are they any worse than Bezos?

If you only count what they did since 1954 then probably pretty close but if you count what her ancestors did and where her wealth comes from then not even close. Britain is right up there with Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, and Hitler in atrocities.

Slave Trade

Opium Wars

Boer concentration camps

India in the 1940s – famine and partition

Yeah, but we really don't persecute people for the sins of their ancestors. I'm talking about the modern monarchy, Elizabeth's monarchy.

I know that someone will reply that they are living on stolen wealth, land, etc, but that's neither here nor there. We are all benefiting from stolen land, and plenty have family wealth that came from nefarious ways.

What did Elizabeth II do that was just terrible and deserving of ire?

> but that's neither here nor there<

I disagree. But rationalize it any way you want.

100% agree that holding people responsible for the sins of their ancestors is a recipe for disaster, but I think what people are upset about in the case of Liz is that she enthusiastically created a reality distortion field that only focused on the glories of the monarchy without any acknowledgment of the past atrocities. Kind of like how Republicans want to teach American history.

I think she does serve as a marker for the post WWII world which is rapidly coming to an end, but 100 years from now all new people, and Elizabeth will be a minor footnote. She is truly inconsequential, and I think if she is remembered at all - it will be in astonishment that people actually cared about here reign.

<< cost the public 86.3m,,, parasites

^^ LOL ^^ LOL ^^ LOL

62% of those taxpayers approve of the monarchy. Why ????

Cuz they bring in 1.8 billion per year to the Brit economy. Without their monarchy England becomes a US colony.

RIP Elizabeth, you killed fewer Irish babies than any of your predecessors, thank you Queenie.

^Because the tourist will stop coming to Buckingham palace without an active monarch. Tourism surrounding the history of the monarchy will continue after the monarchy is gone.  And the royals could live off their "personal" fortune...

Forbes estimated last year that the late monarch's personal fortune was worth $500 million, made up of her jewels, art collection, investments and two residences, Balmoral Castle in Scotland and Sandringham House in Norfolk. The Queen inherited both properties from her father, King George VI.

..unlike the Sovereign Grant generated by the Crown Estate, both duchies are private sources of wealth, meaning their owners are not required to give any details beyond reporting their income...

Last year, King Charles, then the Duke of Cornwall, paid himself £21 million ($25 million) from the Duchy of Cornwall estate.

Neither Prince William nor King Charles are obliged to pay any form of tax on their estates, though both duchies have voluntarily paid income tax since 1993...

That move came a year after the Royal family faced strong criticism for planning to use public money to repair Windsor Castle, which had suffered damage in a fire, Clancy said.

"Of course, voluntary income tax [is] not a fixed rate, and they don't have to declare how much income they're making their tax on. So actually it's just like plucking a figure out of thin air,"

https://cdn.cnn.com/cnn/ampfiles/ampbanner/cnn-app-banner-manifest.json

The Duchy of Cornwall is a completely private fund that's currently owned by Prince William and was previously owned by Prince Charles. The Duchy was founded by Edward III all the way back in 1337 "to provide independence" to his heir, also named Edward...it consists of 52,449 "hectares of land," including farms, forests, rivers, coasts, quarries, residential properties, and £345 million worth of commercial properties

Prince William isn't allowed to sell the Duchy's assets for personal gain, but he does get the annual revenue that they generate. And it's a huge amount of money. The Duchy's assets reportedly jumped from £93 million to £1.2 billion last year, and Prince Charles's take home was £23 million in 2021/22

https://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/celebs/a40940849/what-is-duch...

They really do need the money. How can they possibly support themselves without the help of the british taxpayers?

I've been contemplating whether the presence of a "retired monarchy" that has been sufficiently neutered for the long haul to run in parallel silence with a functional republic better than not having one at all?

IOW, would the UK be less likely to have an authoritarian such as Trump seek to hijack the system if the monarchy is always ready to speak out in a genuine paternalistic fashion ... motivated part because it doesn't want its gig to be hijacked?

^for sure, they would not want to lose control of the stolen assets of the duchies.

>>>>>Elizabeth will be a minor footnote. She is truly inconsequential, and I think if she is remembered at all - it will be in astonishment that people actually cared about here reign.

No great love for monarchies here, but I'm sure she will be remembered, if only for her long(est) duration as head of state.

We are not amused.

.

She's a mascot.  The monarchy is a mascot.  She's "Gritty" for the UK.
